A Sonnet Soliloquy
Gerard's elder son's career took him to Barotseland in Central Africa. He married the younger daughter of Lord Baden-Powell. Their first-born arrived (in Africa) in June 1937.
A SONNET SOLILOQUY - AND ITS DEVASTATING DENOUEMENT
Before the baby's born I've called him Kad-
Kadwallader. R. Klay. (I hate all C's)
R stands for Robin, that the brat may please
Grand-Dad and Uncle, Dad and Great Grand-Dad.
No infant robes for him ! He shall be clad
Even at birth in shorts above bare knees.
So shall he forth to grace our Jamborees,
And drive each broken-hearted Brownie mad!
Then shall come true that happiest Christmas dream
Dreamed by the Chief, and drawn by his own hand
A B-P cub (with some slight Klay alloy)
Dropped from the clouds, to be one day supreme
As King ! If only of Barotseland .
GOSH! He's a GIRL ! I couldn't bear a boy
