University Shinty/Hurling & Camogie Result
31 January 2011

Saturday the 29th of January saw the annual fixture between the Scottish International University shinty teams and the British University Hurling/Camogie teams. This year the fixture hosted by the British Uni’s was held at Newcastle in the North of England.

The women’s match saw players representing Glasgow, Strathclyde, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, St Andrews and RGU.

The match started with a strong fight from the Camogie side who showed their intentions early on by putting the Scottish defence under a lot of pressure. However the defence was covered brilliantly with excellent clearing performances from captain Laura McCafferty and Sara Roche covering all defensive duties as well as being one of the main links with the mid-field and forward-line resulting in Sara becoming player of the match.

With the Scottish team pulling together and mid-field covering large areas of the pitch this resulted in the game opening up with end to end action resulting in numerous chances and excellent defending from both teams. However the Camogie side were unable to break through and the Scotland team made the most of their chances with goals scored from Rebecca McPherson, Sian McCallum scoring two and Kirsten Munro scoring two goals and one point resulting in the final score being 16-0. Despite the lack of goals from the Camogie side they put up a strong fight throughout the match and challenged the Shinty girls throughout the whole game.

The men’s match which saw players from Strathclyde, Dundee, Glasgow, Heriot Watt, Napier and RGU, started at a frantic pace with chances being spurned at both ends of the field. Both sides tried their best to dominate play which resulted in a physical and tousey 1st half with the Scots leading 1 goal and 2 points to the Hurler’s 1 goal and 1 point at half time.

The 2nd half saw the Scot’s up the pace and begin to move the ball about using the full width of the pitch. This tactic tested the fitness of their Hurling counterparts who struggled to keep up the close tackling which contained the Scots in the 1st half. Two goals in quick succession by Alan Palmer and Cathal Barry for the Scots with a free over the bar by Scotland’s captain and man of the match Ewan Murray gave the Scots a comfortable lead which they held on to for the remainder of the match. A final goal by David Fraser and a point by Calum Barton countered a late reply by the Hurlers of their goal and point resulting in the final score being 17-7 to the SUS Men’s Team.
