Who Will Be Watching My Girl In The Yard
Who will be watching my girl in the yard
When I'm gone from this place. When it's time to move on
Will it be too much trouble or just be too hard
To be able to care for the happiest one
When the time comes for all of the earth to grow old
Will the ground stay as clear as a newly laid stone
And the brisk wind of autumn makes way for the cold
Who will keep my girl safe in the yard on her own
No-one knows of this place so the secret remains
Just a stone with a pot and the rose bush within
And in summer, buds maybe will burst from their chains
And another year passes and one more begins
It is just my reminder of one who once came
Running back to the garden to play once again
And no matter that others may know not her name
She was simply my girl that I miss now and then.
Epilogue:
When roads grow too rugged, too long to endure
And the vines and the stalks make the going unkind
I'll sit and look back at the distance I've come
She'll be coming up slow, but not too far behind.
