Welcome to the website of
Sheffield Partnership:Rivers In the Town Environment(South Yorks). We are a Community interest Company ( S.P.R.I.T.E) for short.
The company was formed as an enviromental community group and the aims are set out below
To educate the public locally and nationally of the benefits of having a healthy river corridor, to consult with the Environmental Agency, Sheffield City Council, Wildlife Trust and others. To inform and involve the riparian owners in the protection of the River Don and its tributaries. To improve and conserve the river corridor so the community can enjoy it. To produce local custodians of the urban river corridors of Sheffield .
General benefits
The community will benefit from a cleaner and potentially safer river corridor. The future of fish, birds, animals, invertebrates and plants will also be assured. The company will deliver educational and recreational programmes to the community through partnership working. The community spirit and well being will be strengthened through the cooperative working resulting from such programmes. People who otherwise, would be unlikely to be involved in conservation will benefit from such educational and recreational programmes. Social responsibility and citizenship will also be reinforced.
- Sensitive vegetation management and habitat improvement works for keystone species that will benefit general biodiversity
- Creation of ecologically responsible public access, with due concern to the fauna, flora and animals that live there.
- Classroom educational packages such as “Mayfly in the Classroom”
- Free angling coaching for local youngsters
- Direct safety & aesthetic improvements and a powerful message that the river corridor is valuable (reducing fly tipping and encouraging protective attitudes)
- The community is more likely to place a high value on urban green spaces with rich flora and fauna.
Enables walkers, anglers and all outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy urban wildlife without degrading it. .To encourage the next generation of wildlife custodians through schools and to educate the local community to become socially responsible for the environment.
If the company makes a surplus it will be used ;
To reinvest in the company by providing more funding for projects, training and publicity to the community and longer-term (more ambitious) objectives.
