Cleaning up The Beatlesby John Paul George and Ringo - 08:58 on 18 October 2007
Being a longstanding Beatles fan it's always frustrated me that the early CDs (Please Please Me, With The Beatles and Hard Days Night) are only available in mono.
The early recordings were usually recorded with the voices in the right channel and the instruments split between right and left channels. It's amazing the clarity of the voices and you can hear numerous mistakes and fluffing of the lyrics - stuff that you may not notice in mono.I've got the these on LP in stereo but as time has passed the albums seem to gather bits of dust, plus I didn't always look after these albums as well as I should have doen at the time.
Also I've got 12 albums which were a Reader's Digest box set compilation of the best of the Beatles - again all in stereo and including all the 'b'-sides and more difficult to find songs. So, the time came to do some work for myself.I recorded them all directly to MP3 using an MP3 recorder, then the pain.
I put all the files through an audio editor on the PC.Here I could cut the lead in few seconds before the song started; remove some of the clicks and scratches (not all - I don't have weeks at my disposal); boost the bass and normalise the songs.
Now I'm happy to have most of the old Beatles recordings on my iPod and PC in beautiful stereo.
