The hut is there opened officially and we have to hustle in earnest !
Sun 02 Jan 1916 [Etaples]
Hut hard all day. Staying at Les Ives is awfully comfy after a tiring day.
We have got Ms Grant who is here visiting & driving brother in law to hut with us and he is
Mon 03 Jan 1916 Le Touquet.
Les Ives is a big charming villa taken over by the Y.M.P.A for wives or relations who are sent for to come over to visit any very I’ll wounded soldiers in these big hospitals in 5his area.
Tue 04 Jan 1916 [ ]
A frenzied nightmare day at the hut.
Shortage of water food change
And the lights went out.
But so funny !
Madovan came over to see the hut he is …..
Wed 05 Jan 1916 [ ]
…….head of Y. M. C. A in France & chose an in opportune day.
All went better to- day. Awfully busy, with only Stella & me and one man , but another woman is due to arrive now.
Thu 06 Jan 1916 [ ]
My my ! This is something like “some hustle”
We have just one hour free in the day but all the rest is going on all one is worth.
Fri 07 Jan 1916 Etaples.
It is from having Robin working in the hut too. And he talks so splendidly with the men, and even rather enjoys it. We eat when we can and what we can, where we can ! And sleep at Les Ives.
Sat 08 Jan 1916 [ ]
Walk in our afternoon hour free to see the training ground of trenches etc.
Sun 09 Jan 1916 [ ]

Mr Bartholomew ( a newly made Scout & really retired tradesman ) comes to work in the hut.

Awfully long tiring day.
Peep in to see the Pantomime at the Murray (Y.M.C.A) hut.
Record takings at out hut 669 Francs.
Thu 13 Jan 1916 [ ]
Many old Scouts turn up & we catch some good men as future Scouts in this hut.
Shop in this dirty bothersome smelly little town.
Fri 14 Jan 1916 [ ]
Robin returns very seedy with a bad cold and head. He is very comfy staying with the nice Chapmen women at the Y.M.C.A Hostel at Le Touquet.
It is too bothersome that none of our sent hut workers are here yet. Held up by silly permits.
Sat 15 Jan 1916 [ ]
My poor Darling Robin quite seedy. Has flue I think. It is hateful being tied at the hut & not able to take care of him out at Les Ives. I see him for a bit in the afternoon.
Busy evenings in the hut.
Sun 16 Jan 1916 [ ]
Stella’s brother is in Camp here a corporal in the University & Public school Corps.
He is nice and helps us a lot with the work the hut. We do have to work though have confined with the Messers hut at Calais.
Mon 17 Jan 1916 [ ]
Robin a bit better.
It is annoying waiting & waiting here for our scout workers to come.
Their passes seem to get so fearfully delayed and we are so longing to get home to Eurhurst.
Tue 18 Jan 1916 [ ]
Sir James Clarke ( a neighbours at Pangbourne when we lived there in 1903 ).
Calls & will send his hospital workers to perform in the hut on Saturday.

Thu 20 Jan 1916 [ ]
Awfully good concert at the hut by concert party from London sent out by Y.M.C.A.
The hut was packed.
We have adopted such a unique nice man George Glass as a worker ! He is a Tommy but so refined & quire a treasure.
Fri 21 Jan 1916 [ ]
Go out to see Robin at Les Ives.
A kind “M. “ car carries me all the way & I met by Hugh Hole . It is funny how one comes across people.
Nice little Mr Bethe comes & helps in the hut often. He is a Red Cross driver here.
Sat 22 Jan 1916 Hut.
Robin runs in for a few minutes & is really better now.
St John’s Hospital nurses give a friend show & doctors & relatives give “Trial by Jury” . Quite good as amateur performance.
Very busy day.

Robin comes in early. Lunch at hut with us.
Walk over the sand hills & through jolly woods. Quite warm sunny day.
Mr Whitwell (quite a nice person though a young Christian) comes to work in the hut.
Mon 24 Jan 1916 [ ]
Very nasty cold hanging about.
Every other man seems to be afflicted.
Robin comes to hut & visits St John’s Hospital. Stella and I feel cheap and “ Sandune” quickly and work tiredly.
Tue 25 Jan 1916 [ ]
My cold becomes
Ie and I can’t “stick it “ at hut work after 6.0 but just retire to bed in “the Greenhouse” ( our lodgings)Flue does make one feel rotten. !
Wed 26 Jan 1916 [ ]
Feel awful with achy flue. But hut all morning . Mercifully Miss Hill - whiten arrives from Calais ( who comes to work in the hut for a fortnight). Robin bundles back with me to bed at comfy Les Ives.
Thu 27 Jan 1916 [ ]
I insist on doing the Hut in morning ,but feel rotten & go back early to bed. Robin dines with the Duchess of Westminster but I couldn’t !
Miss H-W & Stella are splendid Hut workers and did not mind me fading out too much.
Fri 28 Jan 1916 [ ]
Quite a temperature !
In bed all day at Les Ives.
Such a rest !
Robin to Calais early. Stella and Miss Hill- Whiton peep in for a few minutes with accounts of frenzied doings at the hut.
Sat 29 Jan 1916
In bed pretty limp, & couldn’t work at the hut as my voice has gone as usual.
Get up for tea. It is niggling being so thin again! Have lost weight a lot.
Sun 30 Jan 1916 [ ]
Rather better. Decide to visit hut. In early.
Such a tragedy.
Mrs Bingley (Canadian) staying here to be near wounded husband. He seemed to be improving and she felt brighter. Next minute news comes that he died in the night.
We all motor out for lunch at Montreal ( charming joy ride & interesting old castle.
