SPOTLIGHT ON NEATH
Perhaps you should first read the History of Neath (menu) to refresh your mind on the past - then compare Neath as it is today. With a sense of determination it is possible to make Neath great again. Above all, don't leave it to the other person - because the other person may be leaving it to you.
Sometimes you have to look back in order to look forward. Being wise with hindsight can be beneficial for the future.
By looking at the weaknesses of the town we can perhaps overcome them and move forward.
We are very much aware that actions speak louder than words - so it is not just what we say, it really amounts to what is done.
Communication
The Consortium has already acknowledged lack of communication within the town. It must be remembered that Neath has not got its own community radio station and lost its weekly newspaper in 2009 after 84 years of publication.
In an attempt to address these issues, several websites have been constructed by those interested in Neath and its future development. Two of these websites were highlighted in an ITV (Wales) programme that discussed the loss of the Neath Guardian newspaper, posing the question: 'Are local based websites likely to take over from local based newspapers?'
The websites in question are funded out of the pockets of a small number of individuals who care for Neath and its heritage. One must ask how can they be improved with some grant or funding? These websites are listed on our LINKS page (menu).
On the subject of communication, one suggestion arising from the Consortium is digital notices boards in the town centre. These could be large screens or 50" television size screens. Maybe these could be considered to be a modern form of a Town Cryer?
Public Transport
This is another weakness and no doubt will be constantly discussed at the Consortium. The obvious answer is to have the bus station located near the train station. This was done before - and should now be considered for the future.
A road train or tram running in a circular route around the town would be more than a practical facility, it could be a tourist attraction. It has been done in other towns and rated a great success.
