Welcome to the Homepage of the new
Murdo Graham Rallying website.
Murdo Graham was the first person from the Western Isles of Scotland to compete in Rallying at National level.
His rallying exploits began in the mid seventies – long before the benefits of the Internet – and were first brought into the public domain in January 2008 on the forum-based motoring website ' www.stornowaycruise.com' via a 'thread' created under the Motorsport heading by one of the site administrators.
That 'thread' was replicated a year later under the 'Island drivers' heading on the forum section of the Lewis Car Club website (www.lewiscarclub.com) set up in January 2009.
Both these forums have at times been 'off-line' and while social networking sites are now used extensively to share photographs & information, this Website has been created to share Murdo’s rallying exploits, most of which was in an era which many claim were the best years of rallying – when rallies were much longer, and featured predominantly rear-wheel-drive cars driven with commitment, resulting in plenty of sideways opposite-lock action!
His first rally was in a Ford Escort Mexico on the 1976 Autumn Rally organized by Highland Car Club - an all night Road Rally covering 180 Miles and a round of the Esso Scottish Road Rally Championship.
Progressing to Stage Rallying driving a self-prepared Mk1 Escort, he became the 1978 Scottish 1300 Rally Champion on the penultimate round of his first full season in the forests. He then went on to drive a succession of increasingly more powerful Mk2 Escorts, eventually getting his hands on a ‘full house’ BDG powered Group 4 Escort Mk2.
However, “increasingly more powerful” meant “increasingly more costly” and - like many other promising drivers - he was unable to continue meeting the escalating costs of rallying at National level.
He still holds a valid National 'A' Rally Driver licence, and in 2010 he accepted an invitation to compete in a friend’s 4wd Ford Sierra on the inaugural Skeabost Rallysprint on the Isle of Skye.
The story doesn’t end there!
