Avoch

Grave of Sir Alexander MacKenzie. Explorer of the North West Territories of Canada, he gave his name to the MacKenzie River. Born in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, he came to Avoch when he retired and was buried in the old churchyard in 1820. Heritage exhibition. 
Dolphin Trips Avoch provide daily boat trips in the summer from Avoch harbour. 

CHANONRY POINT

 Dolphins can often be see from chanonry point
Famous place for spotting the Mory Firth Dolphins from the shore. On the opposite side of the firth is the historic military base of Fort George

At Chamoury Point, on the shore near Chamoury lighthouse, there is a plaque commemorating the burning at the stake of Kenneth MacKenzie (Coinneach Odhar) - “The Brahan Seer”. The Brahan Seer lived in the 17th century.

FORTROSE

Red sandstone houses, ruined cathedral, golf course. If you go over to the lighthouse, you will see the plaque which commemorates the burning at the stake of the Brahan Seer, famous for his prophecies in the 1700s.

Groam House MuseumGroam House Mueseum. An outstanding Pictish Centre for Ross and Cromarty. The unique display is focussed on 15 carved Pictish stones. All the stones originated in Rosemarkie, some dating back to the 8th century AD, when it was an important centre of early Christianity. The pride of the collection is the magnificent Rosemarkie cross-slab, decorated with enigmatic Pictish symbols.

For the golfer a trip to the famous links course in Fortrose is a must.

Cromarty

Hugh Millers Cottage Cromarty

Visit the 17th century birthplace of Hugh Miller, stonemason, geologist, author, journalist and editor, whose life was cut tragically short at the age of 54.

His remarkable history is told in this cottage: here are Miller's personal belongings, including his geological hammer, microscope and mason's mallet. A video film charts the achievments of this largely self-taught 'lad o' pairts'.
