Hypoglycemia.

Hypoglycemia is also known as low blood sugar. This is a condition that can affect any tiny breed, but especially the tiniest of the breed the smaller and younger they are the more likely you are to see it . Chihuahuas can become hypoglycemic from stress, playing too hard, not eating enough, different types of parasites, even being held to long and not allowed to go eat , etc. If your chi baby has any signs of stumbling, is lethargic, loose stool, or vomiting, you should immediately give some sort of sugar get it down them ASAP (, honey,  syrup, or even sugar water). We use honey nut cheerios here a lot for the puppies they love them and it has enough sugar to prevent a sugar crash . It is VERY important to keep the sugar levels of your chi baby up.  Also Follow Sugar with protein to keep the levels up .. It is not uncommon for tiny chis to be picky about what they eat, so if he or she isn't eating, then you will be responsible for keeping their sugar levels normal, and finding a food that he or she likes, meeting their nutritional needs, and sticking to it. We choose to feed a good quality dog/puppy food... A really Picky puppy might even get cooked chicken breast ... At this age (( Under 6 months)) i dont worry about spoiling them I worry about keeping them alive .
Changing their diets all at once can just make things that much worse so once you start a routine they like try and stick with it ...
Also, please refrain from taking your baby everywhere with you on his/her first few days home, perhaps even first few weeks, depending on their sensitivity and size. They are not used to this kind of excitement or environment, and it can lead to
high stress, which in turn can cause hypoglycemia or other stress ailments. Also, It is best to allow your new baby to sleep as much as they want to, and get settled in really good, before you expose them to too many exciting and new
situations keeping a careful eye on them that they are alert when spoken to .. Some will adapt more quickly then others, and this is just a part of their personality and adaptability abilities and puppies like children are not all alike. If you have any other questions, then please don't be afraid to ask, as I would rather answer questions that seem dumb to you or silly to you, then to have something happen to your baby because you were afraid to ask questions.
As the old saying goes an ounce of prevention is usually worth a pound of cure. Thanks again for taking the time to read this page, and for your interest in learning about the Chihuahua breed. Every breed is unique in their own way, and this breed is no exception to that rule.
Once your Chihuahua is past the 14-18 weeks mark most times the chance for low bloodsugar episodes becomes less and less .......

What to do in an Emergency

If your puppy is disorientated, weak, wobbly, falls over or can't get out of bed, you need to act quickly to raise his blood sugar levels.

*****If your puppy is unconcious or vomiting GO TO THE VET. Time is of the essence. He will need an intravenous injection of glucose as quickly as possible*****
