Vintage Brass D-Ring and Padlock Used For Securing Kit Bags

by Derek Mercer - 22:32 on 18 May 2023

As a locksmith I am also interested in history which includes locks so when I saw this brass d ring and padlock at Bygone Times the antiques and collectables warehouse near Chorley, Lancashire I had to have it. These brass d rings were issued to our armed forces pre 1939 for the locking up of kit bags. They were designed to prevent petty pilfering and this one is certainly pre 1939.

The reason we know it is before the second world war is because brass was used for making artillery shells and bullets during the second world war so these brass d rings would not have been manufactured. However the padlock is not a military one as it has no military markings on it and is probably 1950s/1960s.
