Information on how to get to the Isle of Mull

Arriving by train:

There is a direct train service from Glasgow Queen Street (GQS) to Oban, from where you catch the ferry.  All trains are set to arrive in time to catch a ferry.  It takes around 5 minutes to walk from the train station at Oban to the ferry terminal.

For example, Friday 30th April:

Depart GQS at 1221 to arrive Oban at 1527 and catch the 1600 ferry to the Isle of Mull OR;

Depart GQS at 1821 to arrive Oban 2126 and catch the 2230 ferry to the Isle of Mull

Please see the LINKS page for ferry and train websites.

Arriving by car:

Which ever way you arrive to the outskirts of Glasgow, you will have to join the M8 westbound.

Once on the M8 and leaving the city behind, you will eventually pass the airport on your right hand side.  Continue along the M8 until junction 30 where you'll see brown tourist signs for Loch Lomond, Argyll Forest, The Trossachs and blue motorway signs for Erskine Bridge and Erskine.  Take this exit onto the M898.

You'll go under an underpass and the road turns into a dual carridageway.  After a mile or so you'll go over the bridge.  Keep in the left hand lane as when the bridge ends you will be exiting left to Crianlarich on the A82.

The exit takes a sharp left hand corner and joins a dual carriageway.  Follow this road, don't turn off it!  You will go through Dumbarton and many traffic lights/roundabouts, keep following the signs to the A82!

When you get to a 30mph zone you've reached Tarbet, continue straight ahead on the A83 to Inverary.  Follow this all the way; around Loch Long and Loch Fyne until just before the white houses of Inverary, you'll stop at traffic lights to go over a very humpy, hump-back bridge (see the castle on the right) then take a right turn through the archway signposted A819 to Oban/Crianlarich/Dalmally.

At the end of this road is a T-junction, turn LEFT onto the A85 for Oban (there's a castle on the left) and follow the road for around 35 minutes until you arrive in.....Oban!  Follow the signs through the town to the ferry terminal and staff there will tell you where to park while you wait for the ferry.

The trip should take around 2 - 2.5 hours in total from Glasgow.

Arriving by plane:

Glasgow International is the main airport.  When you exit the terminal there will be plenty of buses and taxis available to take you to Glasgow Queen Street station in the city where you can catch a train up to Oban.  From here you take the ferry across to Mull.

There are buses leaving the terminal every 10 minutes.  You need to catch the number 500 service to Glasgow Queen Street train station.  The journey should take around 15 minutes and costs about £4.50 per person for a single trip.

Taxis are also available, ask for Glasgow Queen Street Station.  A single fare should cost in the region of £20.

Check out the airport website for more information on the LINKS page.
