Welcome to Lairg Local History Society

Lairg Local History Society was set up in the early 1990s by a small and enthusiastic group to research the local history of the people and landscape of Lairg. This led to the production of their first book: "A History of Lairg" by Lesley Ketteringham.

Since then the History Society has been involved in a wide range of projects and activities including: exhibition displays, a range of publications, regular talks and lectures, field trips and outings.

The Society also continues to participate in joint projects with the local countryside ranger, the primary school and Lairg & District Learning Centre - to encourage both young and old to explore the wealth of historical and archaeological sites in and around Lairg. The remains of the past are still very visible in the rugged landscape of Sutherland. From the 4,000 year old chambered cairns of The Ord to the bronze age and iron age hut circle settlements; from the pre-clearance townships, cleared for the big sheep farms in the 18th and 19th centuries, to the working landscape of present day Lairg.

This site is still under construction. We hope to make it a useful point of contact for anyone with an interest in the history of Lairg. We have a selection from our archive collection of old photographs which will be posted in due course.
