Welcome to Labour and Love

In September 1913 the organisers of the Crystal Palace Contest made a little bit of musical history when they commissioned the writing of a test piece especially for the occasion.  The composer was Percy Fletcher, the piece was called Labour and Love, and the winning band was the famous Irwell Springs (pictured below with the Thousand Guinea Trophy).

My names is James Holmes, I very much enjoy original music for brass band, and I’m currently looking for a band (any section, contesting or non-contesting) to help me re-kindle my passion for conducting.

Although it’s a few years since I last held a baton, I'm now retired from my job in the Civil Service and, consequently, have more time to commit to a band on a permanent basis.

If, after reviewing my personal details and musical experience, you think that there may be a mutually beneficial opportunity for me to work with your band, please do not hesitate to contact me through this web site’s Feedback page.

I look forward to hearing from you.
