Let's study faith...

What does it mean to you to have faith?

To have faith in material things?

To have faith in God?

To have faith in other individuals?

To have faith in yourself?

Let's discuss and post scripture's and more.

Comment from Donna C. Matthews at 05:07 on 26 May 2007.

Material things are nice to have but can be lost as easily as they are picked up, they do not give you eternal life, the peace and joy that Jesus give you, and are nothing more than a desire for the moment.
Material things do not give you spiritual growth.

Comment from Donna C. Matthes at 05:01 on 26 May 2007.

Faith to me is being able to believe that Jesus will be there for me and answer my prayer. Faith is also believing that Jesus is God's son, who has died for my sin, risen again, and whom I have confessed my sin, asked for forgiveness, and turned my life over to Jesus, Faith is following Jesus no matter what.

The passages below show's differant stages of faith..do we know the differance here? Make sure you pray and read the passages..

  • Matthew 9:29
    Then he touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith will it be done to you";
Matthew 9:28-30 (in Context) Matthew 9 (Whole Chapter)
  • Matthew 13:58
And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
Matthew 13:57-58 (in Context) Matthew 13 (Whole Chapter)
  • Matthew 14:31
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"
Matthew 14:30-32 (in Context) Matthew 14 (Whole Chapter)
  • Matthew 15:28
Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
Matthew 15:27-29 (in Context) Matthew 15 (Whole Chapter)

Some people today associate faith with being able to obtain possessions from God, but Jesus did not even associate it with seeking basic needs from God. Pagans seek those things, he warned (v. 32; compare 5:47; 6:7); we should seek instead God's kingdom and his righteous will (6:33). It is when his people care for others in need among them that God supplies the needs of his people as a whole, perhaps because then he can best trust them to use his gifts righteously (Deut 15:1-11; Blomberg 1992:126). In our lifelong plans and each day as we decide what to do with our life and resources, we have fresh opportunities to prove to God our love for him-or our lack of it.

  • Something the Lord has been impressing on me lately is, "you have not because you ask not."  Like the chorus says, 'Faith is just believing what God says He will do.'  If we're not asking Him, then obviously, we're not taking Him at His Word. God has not changed. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He has ALWAYS kept His promises, had alwways been faithful to His Word and will NEVER lie to us. We can trust Him. So, let's ask Him for what we need in faith, knowing, 100% assured,  that He will do what He says He will do.

'Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.' - Hebrews 11:1

I told my daughter one time if we believe in what we pray for then God will answer, certain things we pray for we need to believe God will provide and this can be a kind of faith.

  • Aren't we all un-loveable sometimes :) I need to remember this when I come upon someone that is having a bad day. I do not know what has happened to them and a smile or holding the door open for them or maybe paying for their 'small' purchase can make all the difference in the world to them. And if they ask why, well the Lord has opened a door and planted a seed, or maybe watered it.

Primarily, faith is believing God is who He said He is, and will do what He said He'd do. If His Word promised it, then we can believe it.

Hebrews 11:1 also tells us that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

We have a hope for our eternal future. God promised it and it's as good as done. Even though I don't see it yet, I can believe it because God spoke it.

When we pray, we are told in James not to doubt, not to be like the waves of the sea, tossing to and fro. Standing for what you are believing for even when it seems like nothing has changed takes faith.

  • Thank you Jan..one question has always got me, how do we not doubt..? I mean how do we just not think of the things that are always following us around, I guess this may be where faith comes in..?

  • Any reply's please.

  • Ah...that is the question, "How do we not doubt?" It is my understanding that as we read and study the Word of God it becomes living and active, enabling us to stand in faith, despite how things may appear in the natural. Of course there may still come the temptation to doubt. But take from Jesus' example and use the sword (God's Word) to refute those temptations to doubt. Okay, having said that, let me just say that there are times in my own life when doubt still eases its way in. All I can do from that point is repent for doubting and move forward.

  • We tend to try things on our own, without God..it seems we'll pray for a certain thing and then we'll take it upon ourselves to start before God does.

  • Yeah, we think we have to be doing something. Maybe it's that "I can fix this" mentality. Oh sure, there may be things we need to do, but we must first realize that we need God's help in all we do. I've often thought I didn't want to bother God with my little problems when so many had such major issues. But you know, God is concerned even with the little things in our lives.
