Ansó, 3 March

The first signs of Spring are appearing. The cranes are passing in their thousands on good weather days, and the snowdrops have been on the go for a couple of weeks. But other things are starting to appear too: in the woods, among the beautiful mottled green three-lobed leaves of Hepatica little purple and white flowers are appearing, and the hellebores are breaking into sprays of acid-green bells.
Today on the high meadows at Lizara in a sheltered, south-facing spot we found the first dwarf daffodils of the year.
And in the pine woods, the silk-web nests of pine processionary moth are spilling their cargos of caterpillars who - true to their name - form bizarre nose-to-tail processions many metres long.
