A night away in San Sebastian on the Basque coast….. In a brightly painted, rickety apartment perched on the hill above the city. Jake did his first Olympic length triathlon (makes it sound like he has done many, many shorter ones - in fact this is his second ever) – 1500 m swim, 40 km cycle ride and 10 km run. The girls and I were his support team. The event is based around La Concha beach right in the city centre – a beautiful sandy crescent with surprisingly clean clear water and views out between rocky headlands and islands to the Atlantic.
It was a very successful trip, with Jake completing his triathlon in just under three hours (2h58), faster than he expected and well within the rather draconian cut-off time of 3h30 after which finishers are disqualified……. Iona and Rowan swam, splashed in the waves, undertook extensive excavations, and rounded it off with a ride on the carousel.
