Preparations are underway for the Fiestas Patronales next week….. Heavy wooden barriers are appearing around the town, propped against walls, awaiting the moment when they’ll be erected across the side-streets to channel running bulls and their accompanying crazy young and not-so-young men down the main street. A bull-ring has been constructed in the Plaza de Toros. The children of the town spent the afternoon with armed with rubber gloves and dessert spoons, kneeling on the cobbles while they excavated a year’s accumulation of dirt, rubbish, sawdust, and a variety of unspeakable things from large square holes built into the streets who knows how long ago, to support the wooden barriers. A marquee has gone up in the main square. The main topic of conversation among the children – both primary and high school – is disfraz (fancy dress), which will be worn on Friday.
The children in Iona’s class are going as emoticons. Iona is very disdainful. She and Rowan have decided to go as Lego Elves. Purple and blue wigs have been ordered…….
