the ferryman lived in Ray and Carols house, this was an important kyle crossing before the railway was built | built by the Jardine Mathiesons as was Ardross Castle, they made their dosh in the Opium wars, and went on to have substantial banking interests wordwide. |
this was a settlement that was lived in until the 1930's, they had postal deliveries once a week and the children attended Invershin School. there was reputedly a whiskey still close by. the name means "little people" some say magic can happen up there. | This was Andrew Carnegiie's shooting lodge, impressive panelling and spacious bedrooms.Awesome views before forest plantations matured, currently up for sale. |
substantial country house with chequered past, magnificent aspect. | completed in 1913, by Millicent, Duchess of Sutherland, definitely haunted.this was a premier Youth Hostel, many visitors from all over the world enjoyed the craic, as did we locals. |
This great site was the centre of salmon fishing, salmon were cured and tinned here ,tinsmiths from Barra would come over in the season. now sadly empty. | this is a typical wee housie. Now a holiday home. |
This hill fort east of Bonar Bridge was a lookout for viking invaders, they would light fires to warn people as far away as Langwell, where there is a lot of evidence of our ancient peoples. | This ancient stone bridge was built by general wade's men when he improved the road west, interestingly as it is in need of repair, no-one owns it, or the land it was built on... |
This is a wonderful hotel with alot of history,Angus and Cheryl are great mine hosts. | lovely yew trees, as you can see from the headstones, catching salmon was the main source of income for people from Invershin, for hundreds of years. |
This is our village hall, it is very smart and we are hoping to get a cafe started soon now that Shin falls is no more. | our humble rail station is in the guiness book of records, the Bartlets managed it very well, now derelict sadly. |
This was an excellent school, which closed afer the war, it was used as a holiday home. now empty. | this important tourist facility used to employ 18, since the fire, nothing.presumably, Mr Al Fayed has the insurance payout but he is building a Bruar like concern near his castle at Balnagowan, he does not appear to be replacing the SHIN Falls, interestingly he is still going ahead with a large windfarm in Rosehall. |
This is one of the 2 famous people to live in our wee village, the occasion was Agnes and Dodo's wedding. he was a legend! a masterful piper, with a brave war record. He was also highly skilled on the fiddle and wrote some fine piping tunes.Angus Machpherson from Achany Hotel was the other famous local piper. Alot of young ones from our village are very talented pipers too. | This is still standing at the Shin falls. |
this is the falls of shin where some pretty big salmon jump over to lay their eggs. | this menace can be found lurking on street corners, should be shot on sight. |
