History

The War memorial for Hipswell and district had taken the commendable form of a village institute.  Situated in Hipswell village itself, amid the huge military camp.

The institute was intended to serve also the residents of the neighbouring hamlets of Scotton and Colburn.  It was formerly a large army hut , reconstructed by the voluntary labour of the young men who will enjoy its benefits.

The total cost of £250.00, including furnishings, had been fully raised by local subscription.  Mr R H Prior-Wandesforde, Lord of the manor gave the land.

The hall has had a varied career originally being built in 1919, and then after a fire being re erected in 1929.  The hall spent some time as an annex class room, to North Yorkshire County Council.

In 1973 the hall was operated as a club, The Traders Club which served the community for many years.
