Quiet enjoyment of the countryside
Edderton is particularly suitable for people interested in investigating local history and archaeology on foot or by bicycle. East Sutherland is a quiet and very attractive area, and includes villages such as Spinningdale (Migdale Woods - Woodland Trust oak wood), Lairg (visitor centre with information about local archaeology and also the biggest sheep mart in Europe.), Rogart, a first class example of a thriving crofting community, Ardgay with an ancient oak wood which is a community woodland. Paul Lister’s estate, Alladale is nearby, with elk and wild boar and Highland cattle.
The woodland borders a Special Protection Area for capercaillie. There is also a local black grouse population. Barn owls, long tailed tits and snipe as well as more common species such as chaffinch, wrens etc can be seen in the wood.
We are happy to provide more information on the local area and to answer any questions you may have.
