The story

From an ostrich to 6000 organic hens!

Highland eggs was established in 2005 by Gordon Whiteford, a young farmer, aged 24.  He was brought up on an Ayrshire dairy farm until the age of 10 when his father changed careers.  At the age of 15 with farming in the blood and very much on the brain, Gordon noticed an advertisement for investors in an ostrich farm and eagerly invested a year's worth of paper round money totalling £1400!  Tragically, this company went into liquidation 2 months later...

Gordon went on to study Agriculture followed by Agricultural Business Management at SAC before working on a local dairy farm.  With aspirations to be his own boss, Gordon saw a niche in the market for organic eggs.  Without lending history the banks were less than helpful in this venture.  Support was sought from Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust (PSYBT) in the form of a loan which allowed Highland Eggs to get off the ground.

Initially eggs were contracted to Glenrath Farms, Scotland's biggest egg producer/packer where they were destined for the shelves of Tesco and Asda.  In June 2010, in a different economic climate, Gordon moved to packing his own eggs and continues to build his local market.
