Future Stars on the Track
21 July 2009

Charleston Community Complex provided the venue for the first of two annual Aviva Startrack Athletics weeks run in conjunction with Inverness Harriers AAC. Throughout the week 50 budding young athletes aged between 8 and 11 years took part in sessions featuring middle distance, sprints, throws and jumps giving them a taste of most track and field events. Before being given the chance to see the traditional events in action at the Inverness Highland Games, the young athletes enjoyed trying the Caber, Weight for Distance and Hammer. The week of training finished with a team based competition, allowing athletes the chance to test out their new skills.

The week’s course was organised, for a second year, by Highland Regional Athletics Development Manager Julie Wyatt who had a team of experienced coaches and athletes putting the children through their paces. Julie was delighted with the success of the course stating ”Aviva Startrack is growing in popularity with attendance figures increasing each year, the coaches and athletes work hard all week with superb results. Charleston is a great venue, with all the required facilities. They even provided us with good weather”. Julie also praised the cooperation of the Active Schools co-ordinator, Dagmar Borrowman, the School PE Department and Ground staff at Charleston.

With seventy 11 – 15 year olds already booked in to the next Aviva Startrack week in Inverness, on the 4th – 10th August 10am – 3pm, organisers and coaches are gearing up for another successful week. For further information please contact Julie Wyatt on Julie@highlandathletics.co.uk
