What is an Independent Advisory Group (IAG)?

IAGs offer impartial advice to the police on a range of different subjects and are made up of people just like you. People from local communities meet regularly to join together to shape the future of policing.

IAG’s are critical friends of the Hillingdon Metropolitan Police.

What is the purpose of an IAG?

The aim of an IAG is to improve the quality of policing by acting as a link between your local community and the police.

IAG members advise the police on a range of diverse issues; which helps the police deliver a better service to your local neighbourhood and build trust.

Provide independent advice and guidance to the MPS;

Help the MPS assess community tensions following critical or sensitive incidents and impact, if any, on public trust and confidence;

Provide a sounding board for the MPS to understand the potential impact on communities of police practices, training and operations;

IAGs have been integral in providing advice and guidance to the police in many areas including:

Critical and major incidents:

  • Use of firearms and Tasers
  • Stop and search **
  • Community relations and engagement
  • Equality and Diversity issues
  • Disability access
  • Community activities

** The Hillingdon IAG have also undertaken the role of monitoring the Police use of the powers of Stop and Search and Stop and Account to assure that these powers are used in a fair and respectful manner. See also, STOP AND SEARCH
