At the Happy Worm Company we like to ensure that our customers have the best experience when composting. We get asked many questions and in order to give customers all the information they require, we have a Factsheet which can be sent out with your order on request.  The Factsheet gives basic information on how to look after your worms once they are in their new home.

We are also happy to answer any questions you may have.

Some of our most frequently asked questions are:

WILL MY WORMERY SMELL?

Wormeries should not smell. The worms in the wormery will eat half their own weight every day, so will break down waste quickly. Start with little and often to guage when the worms need feeding.

HOW SHOULD I FEED MY WORMS?

A few worms will rise to the surface when you open the lid if the worms need feeding. Until your wormery becomes established add small amounts at a time. Try and ensure the waste is in small pieces and you feed them a varied diet.

WHAT SHOULD I FEED MY WORMS?

Worms will eat almost anything, but be careful not to over-feed them as this will poison them. They eat half their own bodyweight every day so the amount of food depends on the size of your wormery and the nmber of worms you have.

Your worms will eat anything. It is recommended that you feed them a varied diet, include fruit and vegetable scraps and peelings, tea leaves/bags (split open), coffee grounds, vacuum dust, even hair (including pet hair). Ensure you add pre soaked shredded paper and card, you should also add stale bread/rolls and crushed egg shells.

IS THERE ANYTHING I CANT FEED THEM?

Yes, avoid acid rich foods such as citrus peel and onion as these can kill your worms. Also avoid animal manure, eggs (egg shells are fine) and dairy products. You should not add any bones or plastics, foods containing garlic, spices, vinegar or meat to you wormery.

HOW MANY WORMS DO I NEED?

This depends on the size of your wormery, but worms will breed and expand in numbers to the conditions they find themselves. They do not tend to over-populate.

WHERE CAN I KEEP MY WORMERY?

You can keep your wormery almost anywhere. Ensure they are kept out of direct sunlight, out of strong winds and in a sheltered area. They can be kept outdoors, but may need insulated in extreme low temperatures.

MY WORMERY SEEMS VERY WET/DRY WHAT CAN I DO?

If your compost is very wet add extra paper or card, this will help to dry it out. If it becomes too dry, just water lightly to moisten.
