HISTORY OF FOXLEASE

The Old Foxlease

Long, long ago, a house stood in the Forest. It was not an ordinary house. It was a Forest Keeper's Lodge and the Forest Keepers were people of importance. The house was panelled with oak and at the time when this story began, the oak was new and the low, wide rooms were light because of it. The square hall with its great chimney was light too, despite the low ceilings. Today there is no trace of a staircase nor of the passages which must have existed. The house was built of the Forest itself, by forest men and there remain to this day the hall, one room and some small rooms overhead to prove that the work was good and sound.

The name of the house in those days was Cox Leyes or Coxlease. Where that name . . .
