Ladybirds · The ladybird is a beetle.
· The wings are under the shell.
· The spots on the ladybird’s shell, indicate which species it is.
· There are 42 different species of ladybirds in the United Kingdom.
· The most common is the 7 spotted ladybird.
· Ladybirds lay 10-50 tiny yellow eggs, in a cluster, on a leaf.
· The 6 legged larva will shed it’s skin three times, before forming into a pupa.
· Inside the pupa the larva takes two weeks to change into a ladybird.
· Ladybird larvae have a spiky, segmented body with powerful jaws and love to eat lots of aphids.
· Ladybirds hibernate until March or April.
· Ladybirds usually live for one year, but have been known to hibernate through a second winter.
