2008 - 2009 Monthly Meetings

January - Ceilidh

February 4 - Donald Macdonald & Robert Beaton - Golspie's past and its people.

March 4 - Members Open Evening, Donald Stewart, Allan Lannon, Shirley Sutherland and others.

April 1 -  Golspie Heritage Society went on tour to Nigg, Balintore and Shandwick for its April meeting. It was a gloriously sunny spring evening and the area was seen at its best.

Members gathered at Nigg Old Church, the first day it was open this year. It is a beautiful old church which is now cared for by the Nigg Trust.

The main reason for the visit was to see the Pictish stone which is now housed inside the church, but others of interest were the cholera stone in the kirkyard and the Hugh Miller stone.

From Nigg the group followed the back roads to Balintore and the sculpture trail along the seafront to see the Mermaid of the North in all her bronze splendour, the stone commemorating the Rev John Ross, born in Nigg, the man who translated the Bible into Korean, and the plaque with the story of Effie of the Two Oars.

The final stop was at the Shandwick Stone or Clach Arraidh. This Pictish stone is surrounded by a glass case for protection against the weather but Jean Mackenzie, who looks after the stone, came along with the key and the group were able to look at the carvings close up and get a clear picture of what was involved in the preservation of this stone.

The next meeting of Golspie Heritage Society will be the annual general meeting on Wednesday, May 6, in the Heritage Centre, Station Road, Golspie.

May 6 - Annual General Meeting.  Mr. Donald Macdonald asked everyone to stop blethering and welcomed everyone to the meeting. Mrs Kay Miller provided the Chairperson’s report and thanked everyone for all the hard work performed in the past year. A mention was also made of a possible upcoming trip to the battlefields of France and Belgium in 2010 to be organised by Mrs Morag Sutherland. Kay was once again elected as Chairperson, Shirley Sutherland was elected as Secretary and Beryl Nicol as Treasurer.

September, October, November, December meetings yet to be scheduled.

Shirley Sutherland then showed a presentation of Keith Russell’s slides prepared by Alan and Anne Barclay. Alan and Anne were unable to attend the meeting. Shirley asked that the audience contribute to the show by describing who and what they saw in the slides.

A very large attendance resulted in a very entertaining evening.
