HANDS AND FEET – Tackling Typical Drawing Dilemmas

Plenty of time is spent studying human faces in portraiture and the human body in life drawing, but we seldom make drawings of our hands – which, after our face, are the most expressive part of our bodies. Likewise, with our feet safely tucked away in shoes and socks, they get little attention and yet are quite complicated structures.

There is so much detail in hands and feet, and it is important to get the scale correct in relation to the rest of the body – it’s surprising how inaccurate we can be when drawing these features, which we ought to know like the back of our … see what I mean!

On this One Day Workshop we will begin by looking at the structure of the hand – don’t worry, it won’t turn into a biology lesson.

You will be drawing your own hand, as well as the person’s hand sitting near you (if they don’t object). I will also supply photographs of different hands to make the comparisons of age and gender, etc.

Any brave people willing to bare their feet are welcome to draw from life, but to make things easier I will supply photographs to work from.

You may use whatever you like to draw with – pencils, biros, charcoal, coloured pencils, ink … even paint if you’re feeling very confident! Please bring your own materials as well as the corresponding paper, sharpeners, erasers, etc.

I urge everyone to try out more than one medium. Fo On this One Day Workshop we will begin by looking at the structure of the hand – don’t worry, it won’t turn into a biology lesson.

ENCAUSTIC WAX ART

This is a fascinating method of creating instant pictures using coloured wax and an iron. Students will be shown several techniques to get started, and then we will work on abstracts, landscapes, seascapes, fantasy castles – the possibilities are endless,  as well as using the heated stylus to create more detail. Encaustic art is fabulous for beginners and for those who do not consider themselves 'artistic' because the results are instant and the pictures vibrant. I will demonstrate and show you how to use this fantastic medium and you will produce several wax paintings which are yours to keep. By the end of the day you will be able to use the tools of encaustic wax painting to produce your own work. All tools will be provided with a charge  £5 to cover materials.

Tutor

Gill  Webb

Gill is a retired Food teacher who has spent a lifetime trying out and enjoying  different crafts. She was introduced to Encaustic Wax Art a few years ago and has regularly sold her designs ( as greeting cards) at various craft fairs.
