Gloucester Arts and Crafts Group Newsletter June 2014

Dear Members,

Here comes Summer.

Welcome to the online Newsletter. It doesn’t seem possible that we are now only a few weeks away from Summer School 2014 . Preparations are in full swing and numbers are going up daily as we speak. It has been interesting to note the courses that have filled up almost immediately the brochures were distributed. We will  be discussing  having more than one tutor for the more popular courses next year.

There have been some committee changes which I will outline later.

As usual I will be including places/events to visit in Gloucestershire in the forthcoming months. Thank you for the members who emailed  me with events that they wanted publicising. If you have any more please email me.

Looking forward to seeing you at Summer School

Best wishes

Gill Webb   Chairman

The AGM that was  held on Saturday, 15 March was well attended. Jackie Garner’s  talk was very interesting and well received. Many thanks to Sharon  Marshall for having the unenviable task of shopping for the lunch and her helpers Carol and Rita. The lunch was lovely and enjoyed by all. Also thanks to all who helped with the clearing away, especially one kind  member, who I don’t the name of, who washed up for simply ages. Without this kind of help clearing away can be very time consuming. Thanks also to Denise and Phil Shipley for putting out and away  the chairs and tables.

Pointillism - 23/24 July

Georges Seurat (1859-1891) French post-Impressionist painter is noted for devising the technique known as Pointillism.  He altered the direction of Modern Art by initiating Neo Impressionism. While Impressionists used small dabs of paint as part of their technique, Pointillism took this to the next level using only small distinct dots of pure colour applied in patterns to form an image and create an entire painting. This technique relies on the ability of the eye and mind to blend colour into fuller tones.  Students will be instructed in how to complete a small picture using the pointillist technique.  You will need to bring a 12” canvas, acrylic paints, brushes sizes 0, 2, 6 and 9, plus a picture of your favourite animal.

Tutor    Dee Roberts

Planets Listening Trail at The Holst Birthplace Museum

Friday 2 May – Sunday 12 October 2014

Part Of The Planets 2014: Celebrating 100 years of Gustav Holst’s Masterpiece

The Holst Birthplace Museum is celebrating the centenary of Gustav Holst’s most famous piece of music, The Planets by installing seven listening posts across Cheltenham.

The listening posts, funded by The National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund, include a solar powered ‘mythophone’, a 1930s vintage telephone and several 1930s inspired listening booths!

The Planets’ Listening Trail takes around two hours to complete on foot and is an excellent way of getting to know, not only The Planets, but also Cheltenham itself.

It is possible to begin the trail at any of the listening posts, which are all broadcasting Planets’ recordings performed by the Hallé Orchestra, conducted by Mark Elder.

Museum staff hope members of the public will post “selfies” on the museum’s Facebook page after they complete the listening trail.
They are also encouraging people to share their feedback on the trail on twitter @Holstmuseum.

Listening posts have been installed at:
• The Holst Birthplace Museum, Clarence Road (Mars)
• All Saints Church, All Saints’ Road (Venus)
• Lloyds Bank, High Street (Mercury)
• The Everyman Theatre, Regent Street (Jupiter)
• The Wilson, Clarence Street (Saturn)
• Cheltenham Town Hall, Imperial Square (Uranus)
• Lloyds Bank, Montpellier (Neptune)

The return of Rodin's Kiss

Cheltenham

14 February – 10 August 2014

To celebrate the 100 year centenary of Rodin’s residence in Cheltenham, Rodin’s internationally renowned sculpture The Kiss makes its return to Cheltenham’s Art Gallery and Museum.

Now part of the collections at Tate, London; the iconic symbol of youthful love will be on loan and displayed at The Wilson between 14 February and 10 August 2014. The sculpture shows the adulterous lovers Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Rimini, who were slain by Francesca’s outraged husband.

Jane Lillystone, museum, arts and tourism manager, says: “We are so excited to see The Kiss returning to Cheltenham. It is particularly apt that the now internationally acclaimed sculpture will be back on display at the Gallery in 2014, as 2014 will mark the passing of 100 years since Auguste Rodin himself was in Cheltenham.

“In 1914, Rodin accompanied his friend and biographer, Judith Cladel on a visit to her sister; his signature in the visitor book marks his visit to the Gallery.

The Kiss will be on display at The Wilson from 14 February until 10 August 2014. Alongside the display will be an exhibition exploring the embrace by a variety of well know artists and an exciting programme of events for adults and families as well as Rodin inspired menus in The Wilson café. Entry to The Wilson is free. For more information visit www.thewilson.org.uk
