NEWSLETTER July 2013

Gloucester Arts and crafts group Newsletter July 2013

Dear members,
Welcome to the new look online Newsletter. I have never written a newsletter before and am hoping this will be the first of many. I hope to cover many different areas of interest, news, events etc and would also like your input too. This new website is very easy to navigate and will help us become well known, rather than Gloucester’s biggest secret. I am including some interesting places to visit in Gloucestershire, they sound great, maybe worth a visit. Also some websites of interest, if you have anymore please let me know. Summer School is almost upon us and we are looking forward to seeing you there.

I believe that we should all be doing our bit in spreading the creative word to all people. Whether you prefer the medium of paint or pencil, wool or ceramics, it doesn’t matter what; we should be passing our skills and interests onto the younger generation- and where better to start with volunteering in schools or youth clubs. Young people want to know how to make things and in my experience just need an experienced person like you to give them a guiding hand. To see the look on children’s face when they create something themselves is priceless. So have a think, maybe a few of you could get together and start up something- you never know where it might lead to.

Best wishes Gill Webb

Summer school –Mon 22nd-Fri 26th July

Summer school will very soon be upon us and it has been promising to see the numbers coming slowly increasing daily. Please make sure that you have mentioned it to your friends and neighbours. It is such a brilliant week and the Committee would like it to be another success.

There will be The Marketplace in the entrance Foyer again, with the chance to purchase Tutors work- there will be items that  could  make unusual and unique Christmas presents. The raffle will take place, midweek, on Wednesday. If you have any item you wish to donate please leave it at the front desk.

We try to offer new courses and like to keep up with current trends. If there are any courses that you have heard about and would like us to investigate, please let us know. This is your Summer school and we would like you are to play a part.

Time on your hands to spare?  We are looking for more Committee members to help with running of Summer School. We meet every few months and get things organised. There are plenty of jobs that need to be done in order to put such an event on, so your help would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Phil, Anne or Gill if you want to know more.

Changes to Beaufort School

As you may be aware our venue Beaufort Community School is going under a rapid change at the moment. It will emerge as Beaufort Co-operative Academy from the 1st October. The new sponsors are, yes, The Co-op! The uniform will be changing to blazers, clip on ties, blue shirts, the school logo and much much more. All in all a very exciting period for the schools’ history. How this will affect us, I do not know. Sharon Marshall (Committee member) will be still working in the school, so she will have to keep us informed.

Interesting  websites to explore

www.ebay.co.uk- this is great for buying and selling Arts and Crafts materials, finished products or anything you fancy. Items are delivered to your doorstep. It is a good place to keep an eye on prices.

www.folksy.com
Folksy was created with the aim of showcasing the work of UK designers and makers. James Boardwell and Rob Lee came together to build Folksy in 2007 after being inspired by the energy in the craft communities in the UK as well as North America and Australia. At the same time the web was offering ways to crowd source solutions to problems and we were inspired by the work of Clay Shirky amongst others in pointing out that the web could lower the cost of doing things as a group. The site launched in summer 2008, employed its first member of staff in 2009 and has since risen to become the most popular UK site for handmade gifts and supplies.
Folksy is based near the University in Sheffield. We have a team of six full and part-time people all passionate to reclaim craft in the UK and promote the benefits of making things with our hands.
What we’re about
1. Strength in numbers. We believe that professional, portfolio and hobbyist designers and makers can reach a mainstream audience, test markets and grow their business more effectively together with Folksy than through costly galleries and boutique shops.
2. Cottage industries are the future. Small scale production and handmade goods offer ways to be creative, manage resources effectively and support local economies. We’re not anti-corporate but we want thriving micro-global people brands too.
3. Meritocracy is good for everyone. Folksy is not a juried site. We allow all designers and makers to list their work as long as it is hand crafted (no vintage, for example). This creates a meritocracy where great work from hobbyists can rub shoulders with the best from established professional crafters. The work should stand for itself.

Social evening 2013

We, the GACG committee are delighted to invite you to a social event to be held at Nature in Art, Monday 23rd September 2013, 7-9pm.

This is to enable the Tutors, students and the committee, the chance to get together. We would like it to be a bring and share evening, where we all bring one plate of food to go on the buffet, homemade or bought we don’t mind, and if we all end up bringing the same at least we can have a laugh about it! We would like you to bring along items made at Summer school so we can all see what was accomplished during the week. A raffle will also take place – any donations gratefully accepted. WE will make it a quiz evening, but don’t be put off by that.
