Chickens
We had decided to expand into chickens for meat production but couldn’t find a suitable type of bird for free range production which wouldn’t go off its legs etc on a 10 week growing system.
Eventually we found a breed which would suit us. They are a slow growing brown feathered breed called the 'Sasso'. This is an old fashioned French breed designed for free renge systems. We imported eggs in the spring of 2008 and successfully hatched them. This batch of chickens were an experiment to see how good they were going to be and we processed some for the Black Isle Farm Shop in Fortrose, which were a success.
We kept some hens and cockerels to breed from and these were ready for the end of 2008.
