North Area Committee Progress Report

23 September update

As part of the second round of devolved decision-making, three of the four area committees have met so far to consider the lists of project ideas for new or improved local facilities in their areas. The North Area Committee will do the same at its meeting on 3 October 2013.

Short-lists: The area committees have drawn up their short-lists of local project ideas to consider in more detail. Officers will compile profiles on each of the short-listed options for reports back to the area committees. Please note: these short-listed options have not yet been prioritised and are not guaranteed funding. Areas committees with three wards (South & West/Central) will be invited
to set four priorities, and those with four wards (East & North) will be asked to set five priorities.(end of update)

Developer S106 contributions are used by the Council for community projects identified by Area Committees in consultation with communities.

In October last year East Chesterton area's North Area Committee identifed one project in the first round (subject to appraisal): Formalise BMX track next to Brown’s Field Community Centre. The aim is to deliver this project by March 2014.

More details on the consultation arrangements relating to the Brown’s Field BMX track proposals will be publicised via the Developer Contributions web page
(www.cambridge.gov.uk/s106). Residents neighbouring the proposed projects and local councillors will be contacted.

The North Area Committee has been invited to identify one priority project to provide new equipment at a play area.  New equipment for a play area is likely to cost in the region of £30,000. Proposals for a prioritised play area will take account of local views and the local context of the space available and existing facilities, but as an idea this money could provide the following type of equipment for children under 7 years of age: two cradle swings; a mini-roundabout; a play-themed climbing frame (say, in the shape of a tractor or fire engine); a platform and slide; safety surfacing and fencing).

Once the Area Committee has identified a priority the Council will consult on specific proposals, identify detailed project costs, carry out a project appraisal and secure
approval before delivering the project (with an autumn 2014 target date).

In addition to this Discovery Way play area has been identified as an area for improvement.
