Buy Your Own Cherries
Buy Your Own Cherries is the title of a book written in 1904 by W Kirton and was often presented to youngsters for regular attendance at Sunday School.
It is about a man who spent most of his earnings in his local pub on drink, at the expense of his family.
One day there was a bowl of cherries on the bar and when he went to pick one to eat, the landlady reprimanded him and told him to buy his own cherries.
It was the turning point in his life and he gave up the drink with the result that his family benefitted and prospered.

The rest of the story is how his life changed and how his family prospered with the money that he would have spent on drink.

It is about the effects of smoking and why it should be avoided.
Both stories have a moral meaning and the remarkable thing that it was written as far back as 1904.
