I have taught philosophy in the North East for more than thirty years including Newcastle, Durham, the Open University and Sunderland University. I very much enjoy teaching  - and learning from – adult students. I am currently, amongst other roles, Teaching Fellow at the Department of Fine Art, Newcastle University.

My research interests are in the philosophy of Wittgenstein, aesthetics and the understanding of animal minds. I am the author of four books in philosophy including “Art or Bunk?” and “Can We Understand Animal Minds?”  I also write reviews of contemporary works in philosophy for leading journals in the field and for the Times Literary Supplement.

I am Secretary of the British Wittgenstein Society and am currently co-editing a new edition of Portraits of Wittgenstein (Bloomsbury Academic, 2016) – a definitive anthology of almost all the personal memoirs of Wittgenstein's relatives, friends, pupils and acquaintances.

I look forward to meeting you on my next course!
