I've been a member of Explore both as a student, largely of literature classes, and as a tutor of mathematics classes. My career started in the classroom, teaching mathematics in Liverpool comprehensive schools. However, I have spent most of my working life as a University lecturer in Education at the Universities of Liverpool, Durham and York.
Alongside these permanent jobs I have been a student, tutor and examiner for the Open University, an institution for which I have a huge admiration. Much of my university teaching, research and publications has been in teacher education, with a focus on the psychology of learning and the role of subject knowledge in teaching. After a lifetime's career in education, the intellectual stimulation and the social contact with the friendly and interesting people in Explore is now an important part of my life. I am committed to working to keep the programme alive as I know it means so much to its members.
