HISTORY

Egton Abattoir has been in the ownership of the Lyth family for many years, and at one time was operated by John Lyth's father - with John himself working in the business.  The slaughterhouse was subsequently leased to the Smith brothers, who operated it for some twenty years.

When the Smith operation closed in January 2011, John Lyth determined to operate the business himself to ensure the survival of the services provided at Egton for so many years, and their expansion to meet the changing demands of the local food market.

The transfer of the abattoir licence from the Smiths to John was not without difficulties - regulations in the red meat industry are complex and constantly evolving.  Nonetheless, Egton Abattoir has risen to meet the challenge, and successfully re-opened its doors in July 2011.
