Derek has lived in Wester Ross since 1999.  He is a crofter and finds a variety of ways of making a living in a small Highland community incuding drystone walling, carpentry and building restoration.  He is chairman of Bealach, a group which works to keep Gaelic alive against cultural erosion in the Applecross area and runs the local feis, Feis a' Bhealaich.  As part of Highland 2007 Bealach produced a DVD called 'As a' Chomraich' (From the Sanctuary).

10 Out Of Illusion was recorded at home in Applecross  and initially inspired by the music of Fela. It is the first in a new phase of recordings in which he weaves Celtic and Contemporary styles with Afrobeat and Bluesy Funk guitar to create a distinctive backdrop to some reflections from 21st Century Gaeldom.
