The Cherokee Rose Gift
The Gift of the Cherokee Rose
Thousands and thousands of generations ago:
The Great Spirit brought forth upon Mother Earth the Cherokee Nation which flourished and hunted the lands for only what they needed on a day to day basis. They played and raised families on the lands given by the Great One. They hunted and explored their lands. They married and greeted one another as People. This lasted as was until “others” invaded the lands.
The Cherokee were driven from their homelands in North Carolina and Georgia over 100 years ago when GOLD was discovered in their lands and then the “others” invaded and The Cherokee’s were cast out from their lands for the want of GOLD, and forced to march night and day by the hands of the “others”.
Today, we know this casting out as “The Trail of Tears”
Kit Carson the famed scout was hired by the “others” as the leader of the rebels who under guns and gunfire forced the Cherokees to march and begin the epic journey. Along the way many Cherokee were used as target practice, and sometimes marched into caverns and shot by the dozens upon dozens at a time by Kit Carson.
This forced march was a terrible time for the Cherokee People and many died from the hardships and the cruelty: And the Cherokee women wept bitterly!
The elder men wise in their years knew that the Cherokee women must be strong to aid and be able to help the small children survive this forced march.

The elder men of the Cherokee People called upon the Great One to see and help the People, and to give the Cherokee Woman (mothers) special inner spirit strength.
The Great One heard the cries and wept with the Mothers!
He caused the sacred Cherokee Rose plant to spring up everywhere a Mother's tear had fallen upon the ground on the journey.
He told the elder men that the sacred plant would now grow so quickly that the “others” could never destroy or stop it again, and after it quickly grew it then fell back to the ground and another sacred stem would grow.
The sacred Cherokee Rose plant would have white blossoms, a beautiful rose with five petals and gold in the center for the greed of the white man for the gold on their land. The leaves would have seven green leaflets, one for each Cherokee clan. The plant would be strong and grow quickly throughout the land all along the “Trail of Tears”.
Great One told in visions to the elders: That the stickers on the Rose stem would protect it from those who might try to move it, as it spread to mark the Cherokee Nation.
The Cherokee women saw the sacred white blossoms far back on the trail. When they heard what the Great One had said they could immediately feel their strength returning and knew they would survive and the children would grow and the People would survive what we now know as “The Trail of Tears”

![]() Cherokee allowed to Hunt the Buffalo
As the story is told around the Fire Circle and in the lodges of the People.
Long long ago it was know that the buffalo ate man.
The magpie and the hawk were on the side of the people, for neither ate the other or the people. These two birds flew away from a council between animals and men. They determined that a race would be held, the winners to eat the losers.
The course was long, around a circle mountain. The swiftest buffalo was a cow called Mugwa, also know as "swift head."
Mugwa believed she would win and so she decided to enter the race between animals and men.
On the other hand, the elder men whom are wise in knowledge and Spirit were afraid because of the long distance men would need to run. They were asking the Great One for medicine to prevent fatigue.
All the birds and animals painted themselves for the race, and since that time they have all been brightly colored. Even the water turtle put red paint around his eyes. The magpie painted himself white on head, shoulders, and tail. At last all were ready for the race, and stood in a row for the start.
They ran and ran, making some loud noises in place of singing to help them to run faster. All small birds, turtles, rabbits, coyotes, wolves, flies, ants, insects, and snakes were soon left far behind. When they approached the mountain the buffalo named Mugwa was ahead. Followed by the magpie, hawk, and the men people, and all the rest were strung out along the way. Great dust clouds filled the air.
All around the circle mountain the buffalo known as Mugwa led the race. Nevertheless, the two birds knew they could win, and merely kept up with Mugwa until they neared the finish line, which was back to the starting place.
Suddenly, both birds glided by Mugwa and won the race for men. As they flew the course, they had seen fallen animals and birds all over the place, who had run themselves to death, turning the ground and rocks red from the blood.
The buffalo named Mugwa then told all Buffalo to hide from the people, who were going out to hunt them; and also told them to take some human flesh with them for the last time.
The young buffaloes did this, and stuck that meat in front of their chests, beneath the throat. Therefore, the people do not eat that part of the buffalo even unto To-Day, saying it is part human flesh.
From that day forward the Cherokee People were allowed by the Great One to hunt and eat the buffalo. Except if any ever saw or seen “The Great White Buffalo” whom was and still remains to this day the named one: Mugwa! And, Mugwa is Sacred Buffalo to Every Nation and Tribe.
Since all the friendly animals and birds were on the people's side, they are not eaten by people, but they do wear and use their beautiful feathers for ornaments, and to this day dance in honor of the race around the mountain by dancing in a Great Circle.
