The purpose of this self study opportunity is:

to train trainers to be able to move forward to support a “Year of Respect and Recognition for Caribbean and African Languages”, in particular the promotion of better understanding about Jamaican Language and Culture by schools, colleges, offender and mental health services and the wider community.

The aims are:

to support individuals to create learning groups to access and share learning opportunities to ensure they can update their knowledge about develop understanding about the origins and development of Jamaican Language and Culture, and other Caribbean Languages

to gain an insight into the vast range of African Languages and Language Families

to explore and discuss African and Caribbean Languages issues today as a thread of learning


The goals and objectives are:

to enable participants to feel confident in using their existing training skills, language skills and knowledge, as well as new insights and understanding gained through this additional study, to run workshops, awareness raising sessions and training in one or all of the following areas:

  • Jamaican Language and Culture
  • Caribbean Languages
  • African Languages
  • African and Caribbean Languages issues today

To support the activities, events, publications and other developments of the “Year of Respect and Recognition for Caribbean and African Languages”

To ensure that resources are identified and developed

To ensure that accreditation is in place for recognition of skills and understanding about Caribbean and African languages and understanding in context of the culture

This approach to self learning groups is based on NIACE’s recommendations
