Cadbury Athletic Football Club was formed in 1994 by Gaynor Walker, a former employee of Cadbury's, and initially comprised of two 11 a side teams. After 12 months of competition the club realised it had the potential to support more teams and added two further 11 a side teams to its structure. A decision was also taken at this stage to run the club on a more formal basis, and a committee was dually appointed and led by Mike Elliott as its first Chairman. A formal constitution was introduced by the club that bound its managers to a code of conduct, and still exists today as the basis for the clubs involvement within the local community. In 1999, the Football Association introduced small sided football for players between the ages of 7 and 10. Games were to be played on smaller pitches, using smaller goals, and involving teams of 7 players. Cadburys decided to embrace this new version of junior football, and began to seek players and managers, with help from around the local Bournville community, to start the building process for what is now the ‘Junior Section' of the club. Local interest in the new format was extremely strong, and as a result of its success in attracting so many interested players, the club exhausted its facilities to run any more teams. The club took a decision to help in the forming of another local team that continues to this day. The ‘Junior Section' of Cadbury Athletic now comprises of 12 teams ranging from U7 to U16, with two further teams in its Senior section. Plans are also underway to establish a development section for 4 & 5 year olds in order to provide an introduction into Junior football and to the club itself. With over 160 players registered for its Junior Section alone, the club has established a big presence in local football, and prides itself on the successes its teams have achieved. The club has an excellent track record in terms of league titles, cups, and 5 a side tournament victories, that have been achieved through the hard work and dedication of its managers and players alike. The Junior teams currently compete in the Central Warks and Mercian youth leagues, and the Senior teams compete in the Midland Combination. This gives Cadbury Athletic a presence across the three counties of West Mids , Warks and Worcs. Due to the number of teams that the club now runs, it has become necessary to extend its home venues to a number of locations including The Cadbury Recreation Ground in Bournville Lane , and Kings Norton Boys School in nearby Northfield Road . The ground at Bournville Lane has long been recognised as one of the best playing surfaces in the area, and can claim links with the ‘hallowed turf' of Wembley. The ground is laid with the same Northumberland turf that was used for the Wembley pitch prior to its closure in 2000, and one of only 4 grounds in the UK to use it for its playing surface. Cadbury Athletic remains a major force in local football, and maintains its basic philosophy of providing children from the local community the opportunity to play football in a safe and secure environment.
