National Conference

"Diabetes in Childhood & Adolescence - more than just a metabolic disorder"

at

Ramada Jarvis Hotel, Granby Street, Leicester

23rd April 2012

Focus of the Day

Living with any serious medical condition in the midst of adolescence can be particularly difficult, and may lead to under-achievement and problematic behaviour in children and teens.  Diabetes Melllitus (Type 1) is the third most common chronic disease of childhood, the peak ages for diagnosis being between 10-14 years, and the incidence of the condition is increasing by 3% year on year.

Diabetes is a serious and progressive condition over which adolescents commonly struggle to achieve good control.  Poor blood glucose control causes physiological changes, both immediate and long term, which in combination with the emotional implications of living with an incurable and life-threatening disease, can often lead to children being greatly disadvantaged at school, and unjustly labelled as troublesome.

The day included the following National Speakers:

  • CHAIR: Dr Peter Swift:  An overview of Diabetes - not a lifestyle choice
  • PDSN, Chris Treanor:  The emotional impact of diagnosis on children and adolescents
  • Dr Maria Salinas: Youth Health Talk - a new initiative

  • Funding - how schools can maximise inclusiveness, support for parents
