Outsourcing Support Services
In the current difficult economic climate many companies are now outsourcing some of their business support services.Outsourcing is basically using someone outside your business to undertake work which, for whatever reason, your own workforce is unable to do or your current staffing levels at a particular point in time cannot cope with.
The term ‘support services’ encompasses almost any activity which is essential to the running of your business or is necessary for compliance for example, or is required to support your core business.This can be anything from simple bookkeeping to special projects, from financial management to basic health and safety and anything in between.
Outsourcing means that you can have those additional resources but only when you need them, something which is difficult to achieve through formal employment.Outsourcing also frees you from the commitment and financial responsibilities of employing additional staff. There is no liability for Employers National Insurance, no responsibility to pay holiday or sick pay and you can enjoy the services only when you need them.
The reasons why companies choose to outsource are varied but are nearly all related to time. Your time and that of your current workforce is valuable and your own priorities are of course running your business, making sure it succeeds and doing what you are good at but inevitably there will be times when you have fully intended to address a particular area but the opportunity to commit and dedicate the time has never presented it’self.
The obvious answer would be to utilize your current staff but this is not always possible without diverting their efforts away from your core business and the last thing you want to happen is that other areas of your business suffer as a result. These days not many people employ staff who have spare capacity as this is neither economical or efficient. You could employ additional staff but, can your business afford it? Can you justify the expense and commitment necessary to increase your workforce for what could just be for a limited time?
