History of the Club 1945 - 2006

History of the Birstall Bowling Club Toward the end of 1944 ‘Bill’ (William) Bembridge was asked by ‘Freddy’ Astill, a friend he had made during the War whilst serving with No 1 Post Fire Guards, if he would help in forming a Bowling Club in Birstall, and take on the duties of Joint Secretary with him. After pointing out that he knew nothing about Bowls, he realised that Freddy with his hearing disability would have difficulty taking minutes at meetings and agreed. The first meeting of the group who were to be the founder members of the Birstall Bowling Club took place at the Council School on Wanlip Lane on Thursday November 30th 1944. At this meeting the Officers were elected and consisted of William George Bembridge and Frederick Astill as Joint Secretaries, and Cecil Geoffrey Hubbard as Treasurer with Mr Wesley serving as first President. An agreement was made with Mr William C. Wesley, ‘The Limes’ Park Road, Birstall to use the Tennis Court at the rear of his house for the purpose of playing bowls, at a nominal annual rent of 10/- This agreement was signed by the Officers above and dated Christmas Day 25th December 1944. Access to the ‘Green’ was made by a gate at the rear by the railway footpath. The original document is stored in the Club archives and has been digitally scanned. To finance the newly formed club 10 members, including their benefactor Mr W. Wesley, made a 12 month interest free loan of £5 each on December 31st 1944 (£100 = £2730 at 2003 prices) – This document also exists in good condition.Regrettably Mr William C. Wesley died on January 11th 1945 so was never able to see the Bowls Club in action on his Tennis Court or to take up his Office as First President, although his name is recorded on the honours board. The Club Rules were drafted and discussed at one of the first committee meetings held on 30th April 1945. The annual subscription was set at 30/- and a joining fee of 10/- (or after 1st June 1945 - £1) – [Note at 2003 prices 30/- = £40.95 and £1 = £27.30]The Green at that time consisted of 2 rinks and it would appear from the records this was deemed unsatisfactory and a special general meeting was called on October 18th to decide the future of the green and its extension. It would appear that discussions were taking place between the club and Bill Wesley’s daughter ‘Miss A. B. Wesley’ which resulted in a conveyance being made to the Club of the ‘Land forming the site of the Clubs Bowling Green’ as a gift on June 24th 1946. The legal work was obviously as formality as work had already commenced early 1946 to prepare the site and have it ready for the coming season. Stage payments were made to ‘Leicester Construction’ and the final payment made a total cost of £322-11-2 - (Note at 2003 prices this is equal to £8806) In order to finance this, further loans were made by members totalling £155Mr A.W.West was the first elected President for the 1946 season, and followed in 1947 by Dr C.H.Parker. Unfortunately very few records remain of the years 1947-1951 but the Club grew steadily with a membership in 1951 of 42One of the founder members Bill Bembridge was President in 1951 and was to be followed the following year by his close friend and founder member ‘Freddy’ Astill. The fixture cards from 1947 to the present day, are all stored in the Club Archives and have all been digitally scanned. 1951 – ‘The Birstall Playing Fields Association’ had been formed with Land donated to the Parish of Birstall to use for Sports and Recreation purposes and 2 representatives were elected from the Bowling Club to participate in this. The Club was experiencing serious difficulties with the green at Park Road, and the green was re-laid twice in a number of places in an effort to improve it.1952 - Club Competition entries were set at 1/6 for 1 event and 2/6 for 2, Teas at 1/6 and annual subscriptions of £2-2-0. (note 1/6d = £2 at 2003 prices) 19 matches were played Won 4 / Lost 15. 2 matches had to be postponed on account of the Green being so unsatisfactory.Income totalled £158-14-4 / Expenses £103 - which with the still outstanding debt of £100 to the founder members placed the Club finances still in the red by £44-0-51953 - Various proposals were discussed to deal with the above deficit, and eventually rather than increase the subscriptions which the Committee felt may lead to the loss of some members, a ‘levy’ was made that each player should pay 1/- per match. The question of Club dress was being investigated and Blazers were quoted by ‘Singers’ of Leicester at 72/- for double breasted and 67/6 for single, made to measure. By the end of the 1953 season all outstanding loans had been repaid which left the Club funds rather precarious at a balance of £111954 - At the committee meeting held 15th November 1954 further news of a Bowling Green to be laid on the new park at a cost of £400 was discussed, but as it was some time off it was agreed that as had been voted at the 1953 AGM that they should eventually transfer as a ‘Club’ to the Birstall Playing Fields.A steering Committee was set up in January 1956 to negotiate with the Playing Fields Committee, following talks it was agreed that the move should go ahead, insufficient money being available, the Club pledged to raise £250 towards the cost of the new Green. The sale of the site of the old Green was now being negotiated. The new Green was eventually completed and the Land to the rear of ‘The Limes’ on Park Road was sold to the Briggs family then in residence there, for the sum of £150 and the pavilion for £25 – (£2761 at 2003 adjustment)The advent of a new Green was welcomed by the Ladies of Birstall, Mrs Hilda Coates had twenty nine applications from Birstall Ladies wishing to play Bowls. It was hoped that play would begin on the new Green in May 1957, the Match Secretary, Mr. S. Mobbs reported a full list of Saturday matches, with the exception of two dates in August. The move to the new green finally taken place, Mr. Francis Burton, a former member of Sileby and currently President of the English Bowling Association formally opened the green. Mr. K. Benson who had pioneered and contributed extensively to the erection of the Pavilion was officially invited to open that building. The Ladies Section was formed. Appeals for more Ladies to help with teas etc were made. It was suggested that men not selected to play in the matches should be asked to assist with the catering. This met with little response. White flannels were now worn for matches.GROWTH OF THE CLUB.Steady growth of the Club now reported in March 1958.Fred Collier joins the Club. 1959 saw Bill Bembridge elected as President for a second term of office, this was due to the President elect, Mr Mobbs, leaving Birstall for business reasons. Non playing membership was introduced and Mr Freer, became the new Match Secretary, He reported that on six occasions during the coming season he had arranged for 2 matches to be played on some Saturdays, he said that he had also been trying to improve the standard of our fixtures. In 1960 Eric Adnett a very respected member of Birstall community was elected President, he had previously held the offices of Match Secretary and Competition Secretary. Mr Arthur Wright joined the Club. A joint Committee was appointed with representatives from the Gents and Ladies Clubs to discuss matters relevant to both sections. A reduced fee for Senior Citizens was introduced, they would now pay £2.00 as against the full membership fee of £3.00.The winter of 1960 /61 presented problems by the Parish Councils decision to allow Birstall Ladies Hockey team to use the pavilion for their matches, the Council were adamant on this decision, refusing to change it and despite requests, no amendments to the Licence was permitted. Requests were made at this time for the Council to provide a second green. In 1961 Fred Bacon, who was also a member of the Belgrave Bowling Club became President, a very colourful character and his election to office coincided with the Cricket and Bowls Clubs voting in favour of Sunday play, the Council were requested to change the Bye Law concerning organised games on Sundays, permission was granted, but few games were played. Jack Cohen presented a cup to be played as a Maiden Singles competition.Mr. T.H. Powdrill, the Clubs hard working Secretary was installed as President in 1962 for a second term of office. He still managed to combine all his other duties with those incurred as President. Tom Gittings offered to purchase a Presidential Badge of Office on behalf of' the Club. 153 people attended the Club Dinner, somewhat different from today’s figures albeit the membership was only fifty one. The first Club tie was introduced. Forty two fixtures were arranged during the season. The election of the 1963 President, Mr A.A. Pinfold coincided with the resignation of the Club's long serving Treasurer, Mr. G.L. Wright, who was leaving the district. Mr . E.F. Wilson was elected to take over these duties. The Council installed electricity in the Pavilion and plans were now in hand for the provision of a second green. Mr Pinfold died shortly after his year in office . Mr Erie Adnett won three of the Club competitions during the year.In 1964, the President, Mr. C. Freer, had for the first time, a Junior Vice President, namely the Treasurer, Mr. E.F. Wilson to assist him with his duties.Prior to the 1965 Season, in which Jack Cohen was President, Eric Bennett, the donor of the Bennett and Fielding Pairs trophy passed away, and long serving Committee member, Arthur Harrison resigned due to his health problem. Double Saturday fixtures were now the order of the day and eight Thursday matches were arranged. Further discussions were held with the Council relevant to the laying of a second green. The Bowls Club pledged a loan of £l250 towards the cost of this additional facility. The fixture programme had been increased, but the Captain, Stan Gunby, reported the need to recruit more members. Dennis Shooter, a current Life member, who was then the village Postmaster, was asked to display a notice in the Post Office in an attempt to attract new players. Problems had arisen with the playing of the Club Triples Competition and it was suggested that this competition be disbanded in favour of a Two wood Competition. Ken Benson donated a Cup for the Runner up in the Singles Championship. Eric Adnett and Denis Shooter were awarded their County Badges.1966 saw the introduction of the Tuesday "Spoons" night, and the President, Mr Wilson offered to donate a trophy, for the person winning the most spoons in the season. The Club was most supportive to many local societies, organising raffles in order to make donations in response to the many requests received. The Old Folks Association was entertained regularly for teas in the Club pavilion.Mr. Albert Merrick, a lifelong friend of Eric Adnett, who was a member of the British United Club, and latterly a member of Birstall was elected as President of the Leicestershire Bowling Association. He attended the Birstall President's Day and the Club Dinner during his year of Office. Some new members were recruited, but the Parish Councils ruled that persons living outside the parish were not eligible to join.Bill Gittings year, 1967 was marked by the handsome trophy which Mrs E. Smith had given to commemorate her husband Bill Smith. It was agreed that this should now become the Championship winners Cup, and the Parker Cup be given to the Runner up in the Handicap Singles. A representative from the Leicester Mercury was present on the President Is Day in 1967 to formerly present this to the Club. Membership now stood at 65. Mr Freer who had been Match Secretary since 1959 was forced through disability to resign from Office at the end of 1967. The Club organised a trip to Worcester , and forty members turned out to play an Indoor Bowls Match at this newly formed Club.Stan Gunby became President in 1968 and Ted Brown was elected as Match Secretary. The No. 2 Green was now ready for play.1969 saw Arthur Wright elected for the first of his two terms as President, this was due to the sudden death of the President elect, Mr. W.E. Goadby. Steady progress was made with plans to extend the existing Pavilion,, the prime mover being the Immediate Past President, Stan Gunby. Mr W.T. Brooks, a schoolmaster joined the Club. Laurie Ling resigned due to work commitment. The Silver Jubilee year saw Denis Shooter in the Presidential seat, he remarked that he was very proud to be the third "Tyke" ( Yorkshireman ) to hold this Office, the previous ones being R. Bocking and F. Macdonald. Club members were invited to join the newly formed Vice Presidents Association. The fixture list was looking by now very much like our present day one, it included a fixture against the L.B.A. Executive to mark our twenty five years. The visitors were dined at the Goscote Hotel. Colin Saul and Malcolm Keatly joined the Club. Match Secretary, Ted Brown passed away during the year and Jack Wood volunteered to take over his duties. In 1971 Mr George Goodwin, the President took the Club on its First Bowls tour to Devon, the team were based in Babbacombe. Electric supplies and water services were laid on at the Club, Mr Gittings purchased all the fittings at trade price, a great saving. Jack Wood presented a Runners up trophy for the Maiden Competition. Harry Slater resigned from the Club as he had now moved from BirstallReg Dennis, a current Life Member of the Club became President in 1972. Stan Gunby was still negotiating the proposed extensions to the Pavilion. Over £1,800 had been pledged in loans, and a 28 year lease was granted by the playing Fields Association, so it was agreed that Mr. H. Goddard, builder proceed with the said extension. John Middleton and Les Marlow enrol as new members.1973 saw the Club' great benefactor, Ken Benson in Office. Lew Fielding gave the Club much valued assistance in his role as Chairman of the Parish Council. A second Club tour to Devon was arranged.Bill Brooks had taken over the Presidency in 1974 and general improvements to the Pavilion continued to be carried out. Bert Canner regretted that he and his wife would not be able to continue as caterers. Albert Smith volunteered to take over this arduous task. John Middleton was appointed Club Coach. Controversy over mixed play was now causing some concern and the club was attracting publicity of the wrong kind with articles in the local and national press and television coverage due to the complaints by Mr & Mrs Cohen based on mixed play and charges for bowls, the committee were not happy with the situation and threatened to withdraw his membership. The Secretary, Harry Powdrill was now 80 years of age and he felt that the time was now coming when he should hand over the reins". Bill Brooks was approached and he only agreed to consider taking on this office if the other duties which had been so successfully carried out by Harry be delegated to other members. Break ins and vandalism to the Pavilion were common occurrences even in 1974, approaches to the Council were made, hoping for some assistance with the protection of the property. A sequel to the Cohen affair led to Womens Lib staging a protest meeting in Birstall inviting, the women of Birstall to make a protest against the segregation of the sexes on our bowling greens. A meeting between representatives of the Ladies and the Men’s Club was convened and the rules amended to read that the Ladies Club be known as Birstall Ladies Bowling Club and to be responsible for its own finances and constitution, the Men’s Club to be recognized as the parent body and they shall be responsible for conducting all negotiations with the Parish Council on questions relating to the greens. The 1975 Annual Meeting accepted the resignation of the Secretary, Harry Powdrill who had served in office for 22 years. Bill Brooks was elected secretary, Albert Smith became Tea secretary, Jack Hawksley was to take over as Social Secretary and Eric Adnett was to be Green ranger, so the great man had finally stood down, leaving four men to do his work. A present ' of fifty pounds was made to him and he was deservedly made a life member. Jack Wood taken over as President. More cordial relations existed between the Ladies and men’s clubs, fittingly so as Connie Smith was elected as President of the Leicestershire Ladies County Bowling Association. In 1976, a licensed bar was installed in the Club during Frank Bowlers year of office, the success of this was largely due to the efforts of Jack and Marjorie Hawksley. Several members assisted with the building of' this innovation which became a great asset to the Club. David Smith was awarded his County badge. The Triples Competition was finally disbanded and the splendid Bromley Trophy was re allocated to be played as a Two Wood singles competition. Junior Membership for the under 18's was introduced, Alistair Kerr and Ian Lockington became the first members of this section. The Jack Cohen saga still dragged on , eventually his case was heard by the Equal Opportunities Commission who found no grounds for the allegations against the Parish Council or the Bowls Club. Social membership was introduced for non bowling members, the fee was £2.00In 1977 John Middleton was inducted as President, receiving excellent support from his Vice Presidents Lew Fielding and Dick Turnbull. These gentlemen, along with the Secretary, Bill Brooks finally managed to negotiate the current 28 year Lease and Licence after successful talks with the Parish Council. The Committee under John Middleton’s guidance were anxious to extend the range of competitive bowling, enquiries were made with regards to the possibility of the Club joining any of the league organisations which were running at that time. Applications were made to the City Parks Association, Loughborough Alliance and the Leicester Private Clubs League. The latter league tried unsuccessfully to extend their League by, the formation of a second division, unfortunately this was thwarted by insufficient Clubs applying to join. The Birstall committee then opted to join the Leicester City Parks Bowling Association. Due to drought conditions and a ban on watering, our green deteriorated badly, this caused great concern to everyone in the Club. Mrs Baxter, the daughter of Eric and Irene Bennett presented a trophy to the Club for Mixed competition. Mr Middleton, Club President was elected to serve on the General Purposes Committee of the L.B.A. Frank Thompson was the newly elected Green ranger and he recommended that only County Competition matches and Club fixtures be played on the No 1 Green, all other games to be played on the second green. Mr E.F. Wilson was made a life member in recognition of the many years service as Treasurer. Les Marlow was now in charge of the Club Bar and sales were improving. In 1977 the Club won the first of many City Parks competitions, Eric Adnett and Dick Turnbull were successful in the Pairs. Reg Dennis was runner up in the Secretaries Cup and the Club won the Wilson Shield.1978 saw Lew Fielding was elected to serve his first term as President, and he was a signatory when the 28 year lease was finally approved, and he along with two other trustees, signed and sealed the documents. Costs were still rising and the Subs had now increased to £9.50. Walter Kidger joined the Club from Rushey Mead, the Club lost a stalwart member as Ken Benson resigned his membership as he was now resident in Eastbourne. Stan Mason was appointed Tea Secretary, but the close of the season was marred by the sudden death of the hard working Social Secretary, Jack Hawksley. The St. Johns Trophy which had previously been competed for by Rushey Mead and Belgrave was now defunct and it was suggested that this Cup be played for annually in a match between teams representing Rushey Mead and Birstall. The first of these games to take place on a Wednesday evening in July. The Club did particularly well in competitions winning the Bramley Bowl for the first time and reaching the Semi Final of the County Club Championship. Tours by now had become an annual event and George Goodwin had donated a trophy to be awarded to the tourist with the best shots plus aggregateIn 1979 Dick Turnbull was in the Presidential seat. Mixed casual play was now permitted on the No2 Green, but only for a trial period of one year. Steady progress was reported and the state of the greens was much improved, thanks to Frank Thompson’s efforts. The Treasurer reported financial problems, the fees were not in keeping with the rising costs. The highlight of the 1979 season was the Leicestershire County Club Championship success, also there were other successes in Parks Competitions. Reg Forrester, Walter Kidger and Eric Adnett won the Triples., we were Runners up in three other Competitions. Bill Brooks ( Secretaries Cup), Brooks & Timson (Senior Citizens Pairs) and Mason, Timson, Russell & Brooks (Fours)1980 saw Alec Lockington in office and the Club won both the Bramley Bowl and the Wilson Shield. Lewitt and Lew Fielding, discussions were had with representatives from the Ladies Club with regards to this matter. Stan Gunby was nominated for the Junior Vice Presidency of the L.B.A.Frank Thompson was elected as President in 1981 and the Club enjoyed many successes in City Parks Competitions, winning the Parks League, Walter Kidger won the Singles with Reg Forrester runner up. Lew Fielding and Sid Moore were Runners up in the Pairs, Reg Forrester and Frank Grant runners up in Senior Citizens Pairs Stan Gunby, the Leicestershire Junior Vice President was not enjoying very good health and Jack Smith the County President, officially opened the new Scoreboard which was used extensively throughout the 1982 season. Harry Powdrill passed away, a seat was purchased to commemorate his services to the Club. Mr. B. Canner and Mrs M. Hawksley also presented seats in memory of their respective spouses. Mrs Timson presented a Cup for competition. Mrs M. Middleton presented a new flag to the Club. In view of Stan Gunby's County Presidential year in 1983 some work to improve the Green was carried out and quotations obtained for the building of an extension to the Pavilion.1982 was Fred Collier's year as President and the extension to the 'Pavilion was approved and carried out. Bill Brooks, the Club Secretary passed away suddenly and Lew Fielding took over his duties on a temporary basis. Mrs Brooks presented a seat to the Club in memory of ‘Bill’. Lew Fielding was inducted as President of the City Parks. The Pavilion extension had depleted the Club funds considerably. Mr. Collier made a very generous donation to the Club, this along with other fund raising efforts restored the Clubs finances. The greens were spiked under the Supervision of Mr Bowler from Charnwood Council, the Club paying for dressings and other green improvements. The Parks Finals were held at Birstall and the Club almost swept the board, Peter Saddington was successful in the singles, John Lettall, Ted Ward And Reg Forrester the triples, Messrs Saddington, Bell, Adnett and Kidger the fours. Reg Forrester was awarded his County badge. John Middleton was elected as Chairman of the Leicestershire Vice Presidents Association. Cliff Macleod taking on the Catering job. Jack Pharo was the new Club Secretary. After long negotiations the 28 year lease and licence on the Club premises was finalised and witnessed by the new President., having taken almost ten years to complete. The Bramley Bowl was retained for the third successive year.In 1985 Stan Mason, who had given yeoman service as Catering Secretary took over the reins. John Harrington was elected Match Secretary. The only playing success was the victory in the Parks Pairs of John Prince and Dave Freeman Stan Gunby and Bill Bembridge, a founder member passed away. Jack Pharo resigned from the position of Secretary and John Valentine was asked to take over these duties until the following year’s A.G.M. Plans were made to erect an additional building as a visitors changing room. A Sub Committee was formed and given the authorisation to spend £700 on this project, we now have this building but the figure stated was exceeded by quite a large amount. John Middleton was elected to serve on the L.B.A. General Purposes Committee. The Club joined the ill fated Leicestershire Bowls Merit Table. The Club was in dispute with the Parish Council with regards to the large increase in the rents , an increase of £500 having been suggested. After arbitration that figure was reduced by fifty per cent. Jan Hunt & Andy Wye joined the Club as a Junior Member, John Valentine was forced to resign from the office of Secretary, because of his failing health. Walter was to become the next Club President, and in his year, 1988 the Club won the Wilson Shield for the third time. John Harrington combined the duties of Social Secretary with those of Match Secretary and in that capacity he organised some new enjoyable functions, including a fish and chip supper. Tom Cowles and Geoff Brown, two of our newer members reconstructed the new Bar. In 1989 Arthur Wright became one of the few members to have been President for a second term. The Club again won the Bramley Bowl, and were runner’s up in the Leicestershire County Club Championship, being beaten by Brush in the finals. John Middleton and Jim Beresford passed away. Saunders Footwear offered to donate a Cup for competition this was accepted and it was proposed that this be played for between Birstall and Rothley, or another local Club. After discussion it was decided that this be played for as a mixed Gala. The windows in the Pavilion were lowered to afford members with a better view of our Green. Now all our members can enjoy a social drink and play all the best shots in the comfort of our Clubhouse Walter Kidger was nominated to be Junior Vice President of the City Parks in 1990 John Harrington was to become President in 1990 and his wife, Barbara held a similar Office in the Ladies Club. This work transformed the surrounds.1991 saw Lew Fielding take on a second term of office and following Reg Eyres resignation, Ken Hill taken over as Treasurer, Eric Burrows and Dennis Shooter were Runners up in the Parks Senior Citizens competition, this being the nearest the Club came to a success. However 1992 was an excellent year, Walter Kidger was installed as President of the Parks, the Club won the Bramley Bowls once again. Jan Hunt was the Senior Vice President, who will of course become President in 1995, our fiftieth year. Several important games have been arranged , the highlight being the visit of the English Bowling Association team on Monday 7th August 1995. The 1995 season will be a time when our members can look forward to playing in these special games and to give your Committee your full support in appreciation of the work which has been done over the years, it is also a time when we should pause and reflect on the status of the Club after fifty years. Some really good reading if you can't get to sleep ! THE HISTORY OF BIRSTALL BOWLING CLUB1995 - 20071995 - The Golden Jubilee year of the Birstall Bowling Club, saw Jan Hunt take over from Hugh Johnstone as President. Jan donated during his term of office a stained and leaded window to commemorate the Golden Anniversary. This was placed behind the bar and illuminated from behind. The Clubhouse had been internally re-decorated, and new lighting, ceiling fans, heaters, new ring circuits, and a new carpet had been installed prior to the commencement of the new season. Commemorative matches were arranged with representative teams from the English Bowling Association, the Leicestershire Bowling Association, The City Parks, and the Leicester & District Private Clubs League. All were a resounding success. The Club again won the Bramley Bowl for the tenth time in the Club’s history. The Club was admitted to the Leicester & District Private Clubs League Division 2 from the 1996 season. Walter Kidger was made a life member in recognition of his many years service to the Club.John Harrington, and Ken Goodacre passed away during this year.In 1996, Stuart Hartop took up the office of President, with Tony Boswell as Senior Vice and Don Austin as Junior Vice. Eric Burrows was Club Secretary and Treasurer Bob Cooper. The Club won the Private Club’s League Division 2 Championship. It also won the Parks Bowling Association’s Triples Title with Dick Cooper, Roy Nutting, and Tom Cowles, and the Parks Rink’s Title with Geoff Richardson, Andy Wye, John Jeacock, and Jim Steel. The unsatisfactory state of the main green was the subject of much correspondence and meetings with the Parish Council during the year. The main green was not used during the whole of April, and part of May, due to the lack of preparatory work by the Parish Council. The poor standard of maintenance work on the main green was a major cause of complaint and a number of meetings were held with the Parish Council throughout the year. The main green was closed for play prior to the end of the season due to its poor condition. A new automated watering system was finally installed in the close season by the Club, with the help of grants from Charnwood Borough Council, £1,500, Leicestershire Playing Fields Association , £ 1,000, and the balance of £ 3,000 came from Club funds. Birstall Parish Council refused to make any contribution. Life memberships were given to Frank Thompson, Colin Saul, & Bill Root in recognition of their services over the years. During the year, Les Marlow, Dennis Shooter, and Fred Collier passed away.1997 saw Tony Boswell appointed as President with Senior Vice office taken by Don Austin and Junior Vice by Ivan Slack. Eric Burrows continued as Secretary and Bob Cooper was elected Treasurer. The facilities of the Club were enhanced by the provision of a separate visitors’ changing room, which was purchased by the Club, and officially opened on President’s Day, 27th July, by Mr Larry Boyle, President of the Leicestershire County Bowling Association. The Club again enjoyed the success of winning the Bramley Bowl, and also the Wilson Shield. The unsatisfactory maintenance of the bowling greens by Birstall Parish Council, and their proposed 35% rent increase for the 1997/98 season to £5,750, again resulted in a number of meetings throughout the year with the Parish Council, and the holding of a Special General Meeting of the Club’s members on the 24th June to try and resolve these two major problems. Unfortunately, both problems were still unresolved by the time of the Annual General Meeting in January 1998.Lee Crowe made a donation of a bowling lithograph to the Club to be hung in the main area of the Clubhouse.Life memberships were given to Dennis Lee, Reg Eyre, Joe Bell, and Malcolm Keatley in recognition of their services over the years. During the year, Colin Saul, Hugh Johnstone, and George Moyers passed away. Don Austin was President elect in 1998 with Senior Vice office held by Eric Burrows and Junior Vice by Ivan Slack. Club Secretary was taken by Rick Everitt and Tony Boswell elected as Treasurer.Sue Wilson, one of the Club’s partially sighted members, had been selected to represent Great Britain in the Paralympic Games in South Africa. A £ 100 donation from the Club and a Bowls Drive by members, played in appalling weather conditions, resulted in the total sum of £635 being raised towards her expenses. The result was that Sue returned with a silver medal in the mixed pairs, a magnificent achievement. Other playing success’s included Andy Wye winning the Park’s Bowling Association’s Singles Championship, and Tony Mullins winning the Over 60’s Indoor Singles Championship. The problems regarding the Greens maintenance, and the level of rent were finally resolved with the Parish Council prior to the commencement of the 1998 playing season. A Life membership was given to Jim Fearn for his services to the Club.1999 saw Eric Burrows installed as President, with Ivan Slack appointed to Senior Vice President and Jim Fearn coming up as Junior Vice. Tony France was elected as Treasurer and Jan Hunt as Secretary. An open evening early season attracted several new members including, Grahame White, Malcolm Wright and Richard Smith. The Club enjoyed success by winning the County Bowling Association’s Loughborough Monday Triples League Division 2 Championship; the Park’s Bowling Association’s Singles Title was won by Jan Hunt, and the Mixed Pairs winners were Andy Wye and Diane Hurst.Life memberships were given to Laurie Ling, Duncan Goodyer Kettley, Harry Pennington, and Robert Walker (Snr.) for past services to the Club.Ivan Slack was installed as President for the 2000 season with Jim Fearn Senior Vice, Jan Hunt as Secretary and Grahame White as Treasurer and Junior Vice.A Junior Section of the Club was inaugurated this year with 28 youngsters attending on the first meeting. Four new sets of woods were donated by the Parish Council for use by the Junior Section. The club accounts were now ‘computerised’ and the funds transferred to Nat-West Clubs and Societies account, with free banking and interest on funds held in linked account. A Club web-site was established on the Internet from December 2000 with the name of www. BirstallBowling.co.uk with the intention of preserving Club History, records and photographs and providing news and results.A freezer was supplied in the kitchen and an industrial dish washing machine, which greatly improved the efficiency of the kitchen. It is now a competition each match day for Ginny to beat the speeches, and often does manage to do this! A glass washing machine was also fitted in the bar which meant more people are prepared to serve and provides a much more hygienic service.A new ‘associate’ membership was proposed by Grahame White, who having read the life story of a future England International player, and how he when applying to join Worthing Bowling Club was told they were fully subscribed and offered a half price ‘casual’ only membership, thought this would be a good idea to introduce new players into our Club. This was passed and introduced at £30 which permitted casual play at any time provided rinks were free, and on Club Nights. Also it was agreed that if the match Captains were short of full members to make up the team then they could be called upon to play in a match. This was very successful and with an early promotion to attract new members 24 joined the club, who quite a number have gone in subsequent years to join as full members. The joining fee of £15 was scrapped and the full members fee held at £65 with a discount of £3 for pensioners.A very successful succession of ‘open evenings’ attracted a good influx of new members, including Robbie Gibbons (Junior) Duncan Brown, Alan Chapman, Derek Hemsley, Brendan Thompson, Joel McCann, Sid Joyce, Mick Joyce, Stan Pratt, Dick Sharpe and Brian Markley. The Club again enjoyed the success of winning the Bramley Bowl against Aylestone Hall, and John Hurst and Jan Everitt winning the Park’s Bowling Association’s Mixed Pairs Title. The Club also became the Leicester & District Private Club’s League Division 3 Champions. On to Division 2 next season.During the year, Reg Dennis and Len Potter passed away.Jim Fearn took over office as President for the 2001 season. Only the fifth person to hold the position twice in the Club’s history, as he was previously President in 1993. Jan Hunt continued as Secretary, Grahame White as Treasurer and Senior Vice. Malcolm Wright came in as Junior Vice President.Wayne Parkin won the Park’s Bowling Association’s Singles Title, and John Healey with Dennis Measom won the Park’s Bowling Association’s Senior Citizens Pairs Title. The Club became the Leicester & District Private Club’s League Division 2 Champions. Sue Wilson represented England in the singles competition at the Visually Impaired World Bowls tournament in Scotland.Life memberships were given to Eric Burrows, and Norman Cartwright for past services to the Club.During the year, Bill Hayden, Reg Ayres, and Bert Hodgetts passed away.In 2002, Malcolm Wright was installed as President after Grahame White withdrew due to pressing personal commitments, expressing concern that he would not be able to carry out the office with the time it demanded. However he did undertake to continue as Treasurer, unless someone else came forward to undertake the post. Jan Hunt continued for a further term as Club Secretary and Ron Wilson appointed as Junior Vice PresidentThe problem with the Parish Council regarding the level of rent for the forthcoming season arose again. They were demanding £7,500 for the two greens, an increase of 37% from £5,500 the previous year and made it plain that they were ultimately within the next 3 years, looking at parity of the cost of the maintenance which they claimed a cost of £10,500 for the 2 greens. Several meetings took place with the Parish Council with Jan Hunt as Secretary present, Grahame White (Treasurer) Diane Hurst (Ladies Club Secretary) Negotiations to resolve their demands and retain 2 greens proved unacceptable and it was proposed to the Council the only option for the club to survive successfully would be to relinquish the second green, and agree a figure and a new lease for the main green. Although in very good condition the second green was rarely used. It was also requested of the Council that for Health and Safety reasons more space was required around the green and they happily agreed to this and would remove the existing hedge if we would supply and fit a new fence. The Council somewhat surprisingly agreed to all the requests and conceded the 28 year lease which had several years to run. They also approved at our request, to classify us as a ‘private’ club with no public bowling permitted, a clause which although had caused little difficulty with 2 greens posed a problem with only one available. An Extraordinary General Meeting was held on the 30th April and agreed at that to accept the recommendations of the negotiating committee. A firm of solicitors were engaged to prepare the new lease, which the Council were unable to offer due to Central Government restrictions, a term of more than 5 years. The cost was agreed to commence at £4,000 per annum with annual increases in line with inflation, and the lease be renewed. This decision ultimately will place the Club in a far better financial situation in future years and enable it to improve the facilities. A figure for the 2002 season of £6000 was agreed with the Council instead of the £7500. It was also established with the Council that we could open the Clubhouse throughout the year, so in future all committee meetings and AGM can be held in the Clubhouse. In addition a number of social events could be held including Christmas and New Year Parties.Mr P.J.Hunt, Mr M.J.Wright, Mr A.Wye, and Mrs D.Hurst were appointed as the new Club Trustees. The Junior Section is still going strong, and two of its members reached the Finals of the Club Competitions. In this year’s Park’s Bowling Association’s competitions, there was almost a clean sweep by the Birstall members. Andy Wye won the Singles Title, Dave Clarke, with Wayne Parkin and Jan Hunt won the Triples Title; Dave Clarke, with Wayne Parkin, Andy Wye, and Dennis Measom won the Fours Title; and John Hurst with Jan Everitt won the Mixed Pairs Title. A tremendous achievement.During the year, Eric Burrows, and Lionel Wilson passed away.Derek Jacques took over from Malcolm Wright as President for the 2003 season with Ron Wilson Senior Vice President and John Lee as Junior Vice President. Jan Hunt continued again as Secretary and Grahame White as Treasurer.During the closed season the Parish Council responded to requests to attend to green maintenance, with an offer to meet some of the costs which they declined. They carried out a comprehensive program including levelling, and hollow tining. Differences were noted upon play and at last full attention is given to the main green and the allocated top dressing for 2 greens was used on the main green. Assurance was given that this level of care would continue in the future so we can look forward in forthcoming seasons of a steady improvement in the playing surface. In March 2003, the new perimeter fencing was installed around the Green, with a double gated access from the Playing Fields car park area and Rose Bushes, donated by Bentleys Roses were planted and a hedge of conifers which looked a little silly initially at 9" high but have gone on at an amazing rate to provide an evergreen and effective hedge. With the reduction to £4000 for ‘green fees’ the subscriptions were unchanged at £65 although the concession for pensioners of £3 was dispensed with. The ‘Associate’ membership continued at £30 and Junior £10 and Social at £5A new Club competition the ‘Open’ was introduced it being open to all full members of both the Gents and Ladies Clubs. The Winner was John Hurst with runner up Jan Hunt.Andy Wye and Diane Hurst won the Mixed Pairs Title in the Park’s Bowling Association’s competitions. A Life membership was given to John Healey for his exceptional past services to the Club.2004 saw Ron Wilson take over as President with John Lee appointed Senior Vice and Tom Cowles as Junior. Jan Hunt continued as Secretary, and Grahame White as Treasurer.A presentation was made on the 9th September to Walter Kidger to mark his 25 years with Birstall Bowling Club.In the Park’s Bowling Association’s competitions, John Hurst won the Singles Title, and Dave Clarke, with Wayne Parkin, Dennis Measom, and Andy Wye won the Fours Title. During the year, Arthur Wright, and Sid Joyce passed away.Tom Cowles made a skittle alley which throughout the winter months kept the club active on Tuesday evenings. A good number regularly played and matches were arranged with Rushey Mead and the Badminton Club. Along with the other social events such as the Christmas Parties (so successful that 2 are held) New Year Party, Karaoke Night etc this is having an effect to add substantially to Club funds.John Lee had the honour as serving as President for the 2005 season the Diamond Jubilee year for the club, with Tom Cowles Senior Vice, Colin Wood Junior Vice and Grahame White as Treasurer. Jan Hunt agreed to continue for a further term as Secretary.Derek Jacques was proposed by the Club, for Junior Vice President of the Leicester & District Parks Bowling Association and Ron Wilson as Secretary. A Special match was played with the LBA Executive and Diamond Jubilee pennants and commemorative pens were presented to mark the special year.In the Park’s Bowling Association’s competitions, Dave Clarke, with Wayne Parkin, Dennis Measom, and Andy Wye repeated their 2004 success, by again winning the Fours Title. The Club won the Bramley Bowl for the thirteenth time in the Club’s history. The Jubilee un-badged team got to the semi-final at St Margaret’s but lost to Quorn Mills who subsequently went on to loose against New Lount in the final. John & Diane Hurst got to the final of the County Mixed pairs, also at St Margaret’s on the same day, but finished runners up.In November, a week’s bowling tour to Mojacar, Almeria, Spain was organised by Malcolm Wright. Three matches were played against local sides, and although we lost all three, a great time was had by all. Due to the tremendous support by members, it is hoped to repeat the tour next year.During the year Eric Wakefield, Harry Pennington, Bob Turner, and Duncan Goodyear Ketley passed away.In 2006 saw Tom Cowles as President. We were all pleased to see him back and fully fit to take up his term of office he having undergone heart surgery the previous season. Colin Wood moved to Senior Vice and Grahame White was appointed as Junior Vice & Treasurer. Richard Smith took over from Jan Hunt as Club Secretary, a post that Jan Hunt had carried out superbly for 7 years. After several years of pursuit of grants and lottery aid funding being rejected, it was agreed to proceed with a major plan of improvements funded entirely from Club funds. The Club had accumulated sufficient funds in spite of an considerable expenditure on improvements such as new fencing, paving, dishwashers, heating etc since 2000. A working committee consisting of John Healey, Tom Cowles, John Walker and Grahame White were appointed to take over the plan of development that was approved by the committee, and the members at the AGM. A working capital was agreed and works were commenced as soon as possible with the tight timescale of completion by opening day. The improvements which included new toilet facilities in the gents changing room including twin vanity bowls, ceramic tiling to the floor and walls, new full length uPVC sliding windows to the Clubhouse, and new windows to Ladies and Gents changing rooms and Kitchen window. The previous main entrance and porch was removed to the Clubhouse and a 3 panel set of doors fitted. A new raised veranda, level with the clubhouse was built and furnished with stainless steel hand rails. The Clubhouse was stripped and completely redecorated inside and externally. The Ladies contributed in offering full payment for the 7 sets of vertical blinds which have proved very beneficial in keeping the sun off and providing a degree of privacy when closed. The Parish Council agreed to allow us to fence off the corner to the approach of the entrance to the Green, which tended to be a congregating area for undesirable types and damage had been caused on several occasions to the brick plinth and a suspected arson attempt. This was done to match the other fencing and offers enhanced security to the club premises. Congratulations to all the members and contractors for all their hard work in so short a time period. Opening day saw all the improvements completed within budget. The winter Tuesday evening Skittle games continued, although because of the works going on to the Clubhouse it was not possible to arrange matches, and on a number of occasions it had to be cancelled. The web site set up by Grahame White in 2000, had been suspended for a number of years and a new site was approved by the committee and created, and is now updated regularly with all club news, photographs and results. This is proving very popular and attracts a lot of ‘hits’. The site address of www.BirstallBowling.co.uk was re-registered. The Club now fits into the modern age and are getting national and international notice. (Contacts from clubs in Argentina, Australia and Spain etc)An open evening in May attracted a good crowd and subsequently the following joined as FULL Members, Godfrey Sherrat, Richard Coulson, Nev Brown, and as Associate Members : Bill Alexander, Jim Paterson, Maurice Jeffrey, Tom Grundy, Dave Callahan, Mervyn King and John Jenkins. Club nights run by Dick Sharpe regularly attract 20-25 players.Birstall were now, having gained promotion during 2005 were in Division 1 of the Leicester League, but struggled with a lack of players on many occasions to compete on equal terms with stronger Clubs. Toward the end of the season with other competitions running Dave Clarke as Captain suffered with a serious loss of players and inevitably we were relegated to the second division for next season. The Loughborough & District Monday triples ‘Lighthouse’ team fared a lot better and were ahead all season until the last 2 games and ended with the last match against Soar Valley having to win 5/3 to top the division. On the day Soar Valley achieved that result, so we ended up runners up. The second team the ‘Sands’ also did well and won the third division and were promoted for 2007 to the second division. The Presidents Photographs, which had previously been displayed in the Clubhouse were reinstated after a vote in favour by the members, in specially made frames showing 12 years at a time. It was agreed that the current Men’s and Ladies Presidents photograph be framed in an A4 mounting and displayed in the clubhouse during his or her term.Sun Umbrellas were supplied by Dick Cooper free of charge, and regularly used to provide a degree of shade on the raised veranda. These added a ‘continental’ colourful effect and are much appreciated. In the Park’s Bowling Association’s competitions, Stuart Hartop, with Andy Wye and Dennis Measom won the Triples Title against another Birstall team, Richard Smith, Grahame White and Tom Cowles. For the first time on the L&DPBA history one club had all 4 players in the singles semi final – Richard Smith, Andy Wye, Dave Clarke and John Hurst. Dave Clarke and John Hurst played in the final and John went on to win. Birstall were in the final at Abbey Park of the Bramley Bowl against Shakespeare Park but lost by 4 shots. The Greenwood Cup was re-entered and although finishing +39 shots, Coalville won with +43In October, another week’s successful bowling tour was organised by Malcolm Wright to Mojacar, Spain and 4 matches arranged of which 2 were won.A richly deserved Life membership was given to John Lee for his past services to the Club. During the year Walter Kidger, and Pete Saddington passed away. Derek Jacques, former past President, Saturday Captain and Senior Vice of the Leicester & District Parks Bowling Association held a farewell party at the Club and announced he was taking up permanent residence in Australia and shortly marrying Anne Bristow a former member of the Ladies Club. All good wishes go to Derek and Anne and he will be missed for his past support and assistance with the Club. The 2007 season started with works having been undertaken during the winter including refitting the Ladies Toilet with twin vanity units to match the Gents, Ceramic floor and wall tiles. The Tuesday night ‘skittles’ continued and a good turn out of members throughout the closed season kept the club alive. With the Christmas & New Year parties now a regular annual event, the AGM and committee meetings being held in the club house along with the skittles nights the club was in a good financial position even before the start of the season.Colin Wood took over as President, with Grahame White as Senior Vice and Roy Nutting as Junior Vice. Richard Smith continued his second term as Secretary and Grahame White his 8th Term as Treasurer.Open Evening saw a welcome influx of new members, including Nev Cass, Gary Norman, Darren Hickling, Mark LeGood, Roger Wildbore, Paul Jeffries, Peter Ackroyd, Michael Ross, with Bill Alexander & Mervyn King moving up to Full members from Associate. We now have a very strong membership with record numbers and are able to fulfil our fixtures comfortably, although it is increasingly being found that other clubs are not attracting new players and often failing to send their arranged rinks. However on a number of occasions we have been able to ‘lend’ them players to make up the shortfall. The Tuesday ‘Club Night’ now instead of presenting a spoon to the winning rink players, has an ‘BBC’ motif etched whiskey glass as the prize, and these are greatly appreciated, and attract in the region of 20-25 along each Tuesday. The ongoing improvements to the green continued and in spite of a very wet month of May all matches were played and the new nets to protect the green proving a very worthwhile investment. The green had been completely flooded 6 times during the previous season, mainly due to a torrent cascading in from the car park. The Council were notified, but failed to take any action to avoid this and steps were taken by ourselves to prevent this by putting sandbags behind the gates. This proved only partially successful and the green again became flooded early June by a heavy thunderstorm. A more permanent solution is being considered. The Ladies Club celebrated their GOLDEN Jubilee on June 10th with a match with the Leicestershire County Ladies Bowling Association, and this went perfectly with the visitors being very impressed with our facilities and the green. They did just manage to win but that was the objective! The first round in the Bramley Bowl was against Shakespeare Park who won it last season playing us in the final, so we had to ensure that we won the match, and did so with 3 rinks winning and a comfortable shot difference. We went on to play Oadby in the final at Abbey Park and won it comfortably with the last rink to finish giving up.
