July & August 2015

by Unknown - 18:26 on 01 September 2015

Rather disappointing weather-wise but we've had a busy and interesting summer with a number of highlights as well as local concerts and fetes, meals and visits...

We went to various Baha'í, Interfaith and local Community events throughout the summer months.  In July Bibhas drove 1,000 miles to the annual Sommerfest in the grounds of the Bahá'í House of Worship in Germany, first attending the 30,001st 'Last Post' Ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres before spending the night in Halluin across the French border and visiting Carolyn's grandfather's grave in the morning before travelling on to Langenhein where 2,000 Baha'ís and townsfolk gathered for the day.  Our friends Ron & Thelma travelled with us, having first met at the Frankfurt Temple 50 years ago...

In August we went to the Welsh Baha'í Summer School in Llandrannog and met up with many old friends for several days of study and social activities.  Carolyn was in the Secret of Divine Civilisation group and Bibhas in the World Order of Baha'u'lláh.  An oasis of hope for the future of the human race during the increasingly turbulent times we're living through.  After the School we visited an old friend & colleague of Bibhas, Dawn Claxton, nearby.  A lovely lady with good insights gained over 80 years...

We also took part in a session  'Freedom to Share our Faith' at Guildford Diocese's own Summer School at the Cathedral, focussed this year on the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta where our friend Kauser gave  a spirited presentation of Islam .  Carolyn attended the Interfaith Network's conference for local inter faith practitioners in London, whilst Bibhas and cousin Robi attended a meeting at the Nehru Centre about the Baha'i House of Worship and activities in India

We commemorated Hiroshima & Nagasaki days with old friends from various groups and launched tea-lights in grape-fruit skins down-stream at Send - small, symbolic, beacons of light in a troubled world.

We also followed all the VJ Day Commemorations, as Dad was one of the 'Forgotten Army', only getting home on Boxing Day 1945 when all the jubiliation had died down.

We were disappointed not to be able to travel to Tunis for Ben & Mona's traditional wedding, but managed to get them round for a Neogi curry before they left, and look forward to hearing about their new life in China.  Several other young friends have also married this summer and we enjoy keeping up with graduations, weddings and new births on Facebook.
