November & December 2014

Following our usual Autumn activities we rounded off the year by visiting the war graves of Carolyn's Grandfather and great uncle in France, for the first time. Harry Branson is commemorated on the gravestone of his wife Florence and children Blanche and Tom in Abingdon, as well as the Town Memorial alongside his brother James and their Trinder brothers-in-law, but now we have located their actual burial plots in Halluin, near the Belgium border, and St. Sevres in Rouen. Very sobering, and very sad that Dad and his generation are no longer here to benefit from the wonders of the Internet in tracing their family stories.
We first spent a night in Ypres, attending the moving Last Post ceremony which takes place every single day at the Menin Gate, and visited the Flanders Fields Museum in the town square.
We also visited Bahá'í friends in Rouen, celebrated Carolyn's birthday with her 60s friends at l'Auberge de Guerlédan as in some previous years, and attended the end-of-term Concert at Plounevez-Quintin's village school with our French neighbours before coming home for Christmas with our sons and New Years Eve with friends...
