Just Like Writing Poetry.....
Spent all morning washing the clothes,
birds on the wing in the bright blue,
I smiled back at the sun in his sky.
But as soon as I hang the wash on the line
the gulls and clouds fly in from the shore.
Seems like whenever I get close to being done
the rain revises.

“Celebrate the local larder at the Orkney Food & Drink Festival
If you’re partial to a taste of Orkney then come and join us later this month for the Orkney Food & Drink Festival. Celebrity chef James Martin will host a series of cookery demonstrations making the most of local ingredients, and there are plenty of other events, experiences, and cocktail classes to enjoy on 20 and 21 September too. Check out the programme and book your tickets online now.
Tomb of the Eagles set to reopen
A much-loved Orkney visitor attraction will reopen for the first time in six years this month. Tomb of the Eagles in South Ronaldsay has been closed since before the COVID-19 pandemic, but thanks to a £600,000 community fundraising effort the Neolithic site will now begin welcoming guests once again. The 5000-year-old tomb was first discovered by farmer Ronnie Simison in 1958 and contained an incredible collection of ancient artefacts and human and sea eagle bones.
Expand your horizons at Orkney's Science Festival
Before food and drink takes centre stage, the focus will be on subjects as diverse as astronomy, submerged forests, and Nordic sheep breeds at this year’s Orkney International Science Festival between 4 – 10 September. The packed programme features walks, talks, workshops, and the ever-popular family fun day, so there’s plenty for folk of all ages to enjoy. Now in its 35th year, the festival is an established part of the Orkney calendar and continues to inform and amaze both locals and visitors alike.
Step back in time at Boloquoy
A historic farm on the Sanday coastline has been transformed into a unique Victorian experience after years of painstaking restoration work. Visitors to the island will be able to immersive themselves in history with a trip back in time at Boloquoy Victorian Farm & Water Mill, which opened its doors to the public earlier this summer. The Historic Environment Scotland-listed farm has been carefully reconstructed and curated into a living museum for guests to come, stay, and experience the life of a Victorian farming family.
Amazing archaeology the focus of brand-new festival
As you can tell, September is shaping up to be a special month in Orkney’s calendar with a series of fabulous festivals scheduled over the coming weeks. The Orkney Archaeology Festival is another of the newcomers and will be held between 10 – 14 September. It offers locals and visitors the chance to explore Orkney’s incredible history, from the Neolithic right through to the 20th century. There’s a wide range of walks, talks, and hands-on activities planned during the festival too.
