From ‘Free Tibet’….
“Our research partner, Tibet Watch, has released a new report documenting the authoritarian crackdown on Tibetans in Tibet at the time of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday.
The report documents how for Chinese tourists, a commodified and sanitised Tibetan culture is paraded for profit, but for local Tibetans their culture, religion, and way of life is constantly monitored and interfered with at the hands of the Chinese government.
During what should have been a time of celebration for Tibetans inside Tibet, armed police patrolled the streets and homes were searched instead. One Chinese tourist even went so far as to compare the situation in Tibet to that of Ukraine, saying that it seemed as though the Chinese army were going to war.
Amidst this coordinated security operation, that peaked during late June and early July, innocent Tibetans have been detained and had their privacy invaded.
In Amdo, a young Tibetan musician was arrested following a livestream of a song with lyrics that alluded to the Dalai Lama. The musician, known online as Asang, has had his social media accounts deleted following the stream, and his whereabouts and welfare are unknown.
Several monks were also arrested in Amdo, following house-to-house searches, for possessing images of the Dalai Lama, with photos of another exiled Tibetan religious leader, Kirti Rinpoche, also being seized.
One of the monks is believed to have been detained due to offering donations for prayers for his relatives who died in a car accident - a traditional practice to honour those who have died.
Online, however, some netizens have found subtle ways to express their prayers and devotion to the Dalai Lama. On a post covering the Chinese government’s condemnation of the Indian Prime Minister’s birthday message to the Dalai Lama, Tibetan users posted emojis showing hands folded in prayer and birthday cakes. During the intensified crackdown, this may have been the only connection for some Tibetans to the outside world.
The new report explores these events in-depth, offering insight into life inside Tibet during what should have been a joyous celebration.
While these events demonstrate the broader pattern of control inside Tibet, they also show something far more important: the Chinese Communist Party is worried. They fear the potential of the Tibetan people, and the principles that Tibetan culture represents.
These reports are making an impact. They inform and drive our work for meaningful change. If you are able to, please consider giving a donation to Tibet Watch, to allow them to continue their vital work, so that we can continue to elevate Tibetan voices and fight for a world where Tibet will be free.
