“Summer of Practice

Part Two

Continuing our summer of practice, we invite you into another four audio practices for the month of August that prompt you to connect with the living world through simple acts of attention. Each of these practices are designed to open the senses to something beyond yourself: the breath you share with trees; the language of birds; the sound of silence; and the wonder of the dark. As with the first set, these practices are multimedia—available to listen to online, through the podcast week to week, or as text to read—and are meant to be taken with you as you walk, potter in the garden, or simply sit by an open window: wherever you feel the call of the Earth is present.

PRACTICE

Encountering Trees

Since the very beginning, we have been intimately linked with trees, sharing breath within Earth’s great respiration of carbon and oxygen. And while we often reduce trees to ornaments within our landscapes and consume them as expendable resources, they constantly invite us—through bloom, shade, wonder, breath—into closer relationship. In this practice, you are encouraged to respond to such gifts with a renewed quality of attention and acknowledge the threads that bind you and the tree together within a shared biosphere.

PRACTICE

Listening to the Language of Birds

Biologist David G. Haskell calls the practice of listening to other species the original “augmented reality.” Paying attention to the tongues of the more-than-human, he says, we honor an inheritance of deep listening, bequeathed by a lineage of ancestors extending back hundreds of millions of years. This practice invites you to attune to the birdcall in your homeplace; become aware of the ecological rhythms and connections around and within you; and step into a sense of belonging as the conversations of humans and birds intertwine.

PRACTICE

Listening for Silence

Inspired by our virtual reality film Sanctuaries of Silence, which follows acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton as he documents the sounds of the Hoh Rain Forest, this practice invites you to discover how a new experience of sound and silence can change our relationship to the living world. The simple act of listening to the natural world can profoundly impact our relationship to place, rooting us in a presence that we otherwise often take for granted.

PRACTICE

Being with the Dark

We’re living in a world that is perpetually bathed in artificial light. We repel the dark. And yet, we live in the midst of what is often referred to as “dark times.” How can we be present and engaged in these dark times? How can gazing upon the night sky connect us to a greater sense of space, beauty, and possibility? In five steps, this practice invites you to immerse yourself in nightfall and welcome the night as a window into mystery and awe.
