 ‘Great’ Britain?......

I commented….

Robinson RR…

…….has recently had an exhibition of his art-works at the Northlight Gallery, Stromness.  During this exhibition - this happened - the tale is told by Ralph….

‘A young man strode into the gallery yesterday, made his way from the door to the farthest reaches of the gallery, passing without notice several almost 3 metre tall sculptures, to arrive at a small framed artwork. He stared at the work for about five seconds and said;

“A British flag! Right that’s it!”

He turned on his heels and strode out of the gallery in disgust. His visit lasted about 20 seconds.

The picture, titled ‘Ozymandias’, that so inflamed his passion is shown below. The offending image is 4cms long and shows just a sliver of the Union Flag. It features on, I think, a Tesco fruit box.

So, that was the second piece of performative disgust to feature in two separate exhibitions of mine over the past two or three weeks!

I’m not sure if I should feel flattered or upset.

Well, okay, I do feel a bit flattered!’

My response was…

I’d go for flattered – when people like that react in that way to your work – your work is doing what it’s meant to be doing/made for – wouldn’t you say?

I’m thinking of Father Ted’s….. ‘Down with this sorta thing!’ …

I was also puttering at Mike, along the lines of…..someone taking a hump at the Union Jack (representing Britain) being compared to Ozymandias – is non-sense.  That’s a completely fitting comparison – what was  ‘Great’ Britain now tags onto and bows down to whoever pays or ‘donates’.

Britain isn’t just America’s poodle – it’s the lap-dog of anyone with money and influence.

My problem with this is  – I love dogs – some of my best friends are poodle crosses."
